Yup.
"...The benefit it has over PS is that you can use one layer to mask multiple layers.....
...If you like all the tweaks to a Smart Material YOU SAVE IT SO YOU CAN USE IT LATER!...If you like all the tweaks to a material, you want to save that as a new one. It's not rocket science..."

Yes, I did, but it still only adds geometry even if I try to use some other brush. And the weirdness in the "Paint Room" remains a mystery as well...
edit: I think I have figured out what went wrong in the "Paint Room", this was a stupid NOOB error, not having tried 3d coat for so long rears its ugly head, I hadn't taken the "depth modulator" into account, but the problem in Voxel Sculpt persists, all brushes seem to give the same result.
Righto. Glad to see you got the problem sorted.

They work fine with cube mapping, especially if you're in a hurry

Did you click 'Apply' to the cube when you imported it as a voxel (converts the poly primitive to a voxel object), and did you increase the voxel resolution of the voxel layer before hitting Apply (gives the voxel layer enough resolution to hold voxels)?

I've always liked the Photoshop way of right clicking on a layer wit hthe Move Tool current, which brings up a list of layers below where the cursor is if they they're not transparent at that pixel.

Good to know it's not just me Managed to restore the lost kitties from a backup.

And just to make it more confusing, I copied a material and repeated the fatal steps, and the material didn't delete. The two materials that deleted only had one internal layer, whereas the one that survived had multiple internal layers, which is the only difference I can think of.

Edit Smart Material and then immediately hitting 'Cancel' is deleting the smart material. Just lost my Default Material (which was very useful for decals). Tried it on another (dispensable) smart material and that one went bye-bye too.
Can anyone advise on restoring the Default Material (found under the 'default' tab) without a reinstall?

What suits one artist doesn't particularly suit another. And while some artists may find it difficult to attain a particular look using one set of tools, others may find it very straightforward. Restricting a toolset because of a theoretical or perceived advantage of one set over another can be in danger of making very large assumptions. The process is the people, not the tools.

3DScans have an ecorche scan for sale. It comes as hi-rez Zbrush and decimated obj.

I've managed to cleanup edges in InstantMeshes by going back and stroking the edges after examining the mesh extract. No need to start from scratch and almost immediate feedack. The occasional tris don't bother me, either, but perhaps some workflows require pure quads. I have tools in my main app (Softimage) that can quickly identify and quadrangulate or triangulate the offending culprits. This tech inside 3DC would be awesome. I suspect it'll be appearing in a bunch of apps.
Nice comparisons, I have to say.

I use those brushes a lot on voxels, especially Draw which keeps my voxels intact but is a very clean tool to work with. Please don't remove them for voxel mode. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, as they say. Seriously, there's no point to getting rid of it from the voxel options if it works well.
-
There's a slider for mesh density, but at this stage you need to reload the obj when it's changed. You can output an even higher rez quad mesh by switching on 'use dense quads' in the mesh output dialogue.

We're not losing voxels are we???!!!!

The only problem I've had is with it hanging when exporting a mesh that has more than one poly island, plus the occasional hang on export with a single poly island mesh. Other than that, though, it's absolutely fantastic and intuitive and definitely the way forward. For a smooth mesh (the ones I've been testing have lots of hard surfaces, protrusions and nooks and crannies) it's an absolute breeze. Top notch.

It's a client job and confidential I'm afraid. But I will do for a personal project.

I've already made some custom versions

These metals are great. The essentials can often be overlooked in favour of the eye candy. Thanks, and a bargain as far as I'm concerned.

The 'combine with children' option's disappeared in the Sculpt Room. Is this a permanent absence? :-(

Usinf the Eraser in the Paint Room is really erratic. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, using any of the different tools. I can't put my finger on why it suddenly refuses to erase.

No, scrap that last. It's suddenly working again. :-)

Paint Room: Stencil tiling in 'From camera' projection mode isn't working. You can paint within the single stencil tile. >-(

I just use a new layer and set the opacity to zero for the attribute/s I want to get rid of. Once it's all exported it's the same end result.

Brush alpha
in General 3DCoat

That looks like possible antialiasing artefact issues with your alpha, which I've had with very fine scratch alphas or even textures used in smart materials. It could be your texture map setup is too low a resolution for the alpha's "daintiness", and you might want to try and modify the original alpha artwork so that it's 'chunkier', and reimport it.
