  1. My sediments exactly. I think the way Andrew had expaned it if i remember it correctly, it's been a while, that it would be based on a 2pt polygonal system that can be shaped with length, curl, wavyness, thickness using texture mapping/mask methods and colored using of course what is already available in the shaders. I don't expect dynamics of any sort, never wanted them, just a way to custom shape/color the hairs.

Hey Sethren, you must be spending too much time generating those great Genetica textures! Sediments? Sentiments! :)

  2. That's sweet!

I haven't thought this out, but does anyone else think an integration with 3d-Trees and 3D-Coat would be a good idea? Similar to the 3DC and Photoshop (or external editor) link. Maybe the initial 3DC start-up screen could have a"tree" icon in addition to the one's already present.

I can see generating a tree and throwing it back to 3DC for some sculpting/painting etc. Of course this can already be done via export/import, but it seems to me it would be pretty cool doing the whole thing without leaving 3DC.

Paint on leaves in 3DC? Maybe in the future leaves and grasses can be generated by the new hair/fiber system?

..... and then a rock or stone generator :)

  3. Speaking of files..... Lightwave has a nice incremental file save feature that I really like. You start your projects and on the first save, you save it like: "myFile_v001.lws". The "_v001" would be a requirement that the incremental save can work from. Then, each time you hit the incremental save hotkey, the filename is saved as "myFile_v002.lws, myFille_v003.lws", etc.

This is an alternative to doing a bunch of undo's and (I find) convenient enough that it almost becomes an unconscious part of the workflow. Just a little cleanup at the end or maybe it's worth saving the version for possible modifications in the future.

Anyway, just a small request that should be quite easy to implement.

  4. Here's another point. I'm probably one of the few user's here who still use a dial-up Internet connection. So I prefer tutorials I can download and watch at my leisure without tying up my single phone line.

Since this is a very international site/program, I think it should be kept as flexible as possible. I also believe that's one reason there was so much debate over the name change -- lots of different interpretations over over words like "gem" or "coat" from a world-wide audience.

  5. Yes, mainly capturing. But most authoring tools combine capturing, editing, frame transitions, etc. For example, the site I mention above also sells flash creation software. By giving away their player, it probably helps sales to people who want to create content.

I guess I worry that selecting an "official" format might result in keeping some tutorials from being written (due to a lack of authoring tools for that format.) But if free conversion software is available, then there's no problem.

  6. There is a free flv player available at: http://www.flvsoft.com/flv_player/

I just tried it on winXP x32 and winXP x64 systems and it installed and worked fine without an Internet connection or use of a browser.

You can associate .flv files and double click one to start the player or start the player and do a file|load. It is a bit disconcerting when starting the player because the intro screen shows a little line graph with the text "loading". Then it just "sits" there. I expected the "loading" to complete, but it doesn't. But you can click "file" and load your .flv. So I guess the "loading" means it's loaded up to a point but still needs a file to process.

Here's something to think about though. A real concern to me is not the format but can the tutorial makers afford the tools to make their tutorials in a certain format? Many tutorial writers have purchased tools for a particular format, say flv, and may not want to purchase more tools (Quicktime Pro) just to support an official 3D-C (tutorial) format. So it may have have adverse effect on limiting some tutorials.

I don't know if the tools convert between formats -- maybe someone who is knowledgeable in this area can comment?

  7. So Mudbox, Rhino, Genetica, Crazybump, xFrog, Poser, or Gimp doesn't sound cheap, but 3D-Gem does?

Anyway, I guess it's not worth arguing over -- I like the program no matter what it's named. I questioned (and still do) how the name 3D-Gem sounds cheap. I haven't seen any evidence yet.

I could see 3D-Plastic, 3D-Rock, 3d-Mud, etc, sounding cheap. Why wouldn't 3D-Coat sound cheap? You can buy cheap or expensive coats, just as you can buy cheap or expensive gems. But you don't hear or see phrases like "that's the coat of groups" but there are hundreds of examples of "that's the gem of the group". Why is that? Because gem has a meaning of "standing out in a crowd or group" In this case, it's a 3D program.

But coat is fine. "A coat of paint" or "the texture coating" works considering what 3D-Brush does.

  8. I'm still confused over the word "Gem". I tried a Google search of the exact phrase "Gem of a program" and didn't see it used in a bad or cheap way. Maybe someone can point out a site that uses it that way.

Here's a small portion of the Google search:

    http://www.google.com/search?q=+%22gem+of+...art=10&sa=N

I'm not saying anyone is wrong, I just had never run into the word "gem" meaning cheap or have a negative connotation and have seen it used meaning "this one stands out from the group.".

  9. Wow, great update!

I was wondering about a new feature that could be easy to implemented. Lightwave has an incremental object save. What you do is first save your file, like "myObject_v001.3db". Then you can press Shift-S or some other key combination and the file will automatically save as "myObject_v002.3db". The _v00x increments.

For me this makes it more likely I'll have a saved version.

  10. I liked the simplicity of just 3DB so 3DC would be just as good for me also..

(Andrew, it's lawyers who write the laws!)

Yes, but it's not worth taking a big financial loss over a product name. While they may write the laws, they also know them and (hopefully) advise accordingly.

The main thing is, we have a very nice program at a great price, that the developer is really improving and supporting -- what more can we ask for?

So, 3D-Coat works fine for me. I suspect we will refer to it as 3DC anyway, and that has a nice sound (rhymes.) :)

  11. I guess I'm living in the past. When I was growing up, my father had a lapidary business and "rocks and gems" definitely had different connotations. There were precious, semi-precious, and fake gems. There's and entry for gemstones at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemstone

    I believe a diamond is a gem.

Now costume jewelry is considered cheap.

Anyway, this is the first time I heard the word "gem" meant cheap. Is this some slang version?

  12. New site looks great!

You know you've arrived when you have to worry about legal stuff.

    I like 3D-Gem.

I believe "3D" is generic so no worries there. "Gem" has a good meaning -- something that stands out from the rest. A "gem" can be something that is less costly, like "program XYZ is the gem of the widget software because of it's lower price and unique features. Check out this gem at http://www.3d-gem.com/ ".

I'm not sure why a "gem" sounds cheap. A fake gem sounds cheap, but a real gem doesn't.

  13. If one selects the first option on the first question, it seems to make the next two questions invalid. But if one doesn't respond to the second and third question, an error is reported. So I guess "at some point in the future" is the only response for those, in this case.

I guess I chose "before any new features are implemented" because I think it may be harder to implement a 64 bit version and multi core support as the program grows more complex.

Lightwave supports 32 and 64 bit versions, which can be installed and run on the same computer. It's common for 64 bit users to compare bugs to the 32 bit version. So maybe a "release new features in 32 bit" then follow with a 64 bit version after some 32 bit beta testing, would work.

I think most developers face this 64 bit/multi core challenge and it appears (to me) that it's inevitable that it's the way of the future. Features like hair and fur will really take more memory and rendering can take advantage of multi-threading.
