Thanks for your response! After tinkering with it on my own I figured it was because of the brush rotation on the pose tool. It somehow became rotated 350 degrees, but it would then give that rotation to the other tools.
I fixed it by going to pose tool, right clicking the alpha > brush options panel > rotation 0.
