  1. And in this case ... since the bug only appears when system

resources are very demanding on both the main RAM and the graphics card.

So I'm happy to continue investigating the likelihood of this being

a case of lame graphics card.

In another thread, Andrew posted the following specs for 3dCoat:

Minimal requirements are the same - Radeon 9200/FX 5500/GMA945, 128 Video RAM, 512 RAM, 1 GGz CPU

    Optimal by price - NV 8600 (512) + 2 core CPU +2GB RAM

Optimal - NV 8800 and better, 4GB RAM, 4 core CPU

Did you say earlier that you have a 256mb graphics card?

If so, Andrew mentions the need for a 512mb graphics card for optimal performance. Can you try a better graphics card?

    Cheers

  2. Hi,

good news for anybody on a budget: Microsoft purchased Truespace (Caligari).

Now, where's the "good" news about that, some might ask. Well, not being overly fond of Crimosoft myself - Truespace is free to get for everybody!

Not stopping at that, if you visit the Caligari site, you can also go and grab every video tutorial - old and new - for free, too. Over one DVD worth of zipped tutorials.

    Have fun....

Thanks for posting, but that news is several months old! :-)

  3. Hi,

I just ordered today and this seems like a great program. I notice V3 is out soon/coming will there be a discount for new buyers if it's not too far away? thanks

    Edit -

Quick idea also sometimes the popup help can seem to sudden so maybe add the option to set popup reaction/show time so it only shows if hovered over for 2 seconds etc.

I'm pretty sure that Andrew said that the upgrade from2-3 would be approx. $100

  4. Our programmer started at Linux Ubuntu 64

Good news for me-that's the Linux distro that I use! :-)

I don't know when he will finish. This task can take from 1 week to 1.5-2 months (because this is not high priory task for him). I am sure there in not much work. Most of work was done during porting to mac and to 64-bit windows.

No hurry, I'd rather it was done right, rather than fast and buggy!

About licensing - I think there will be same policy as for Mac version (+40$ = Linux+Mac+Win).

Key from Mac version will work on Linux.

I own 3dC for windows. Are you saying that I would need to pay $40 more for the Linux version, but an 3dC Mac user gets the Linux version for free? that hardly seems fair.

Houdini lets you change from Windows to Linux by simply deregstering the Houdini Windows then registering for Houdini Linux-all at no cost.

    Cheers

  5. OSX programmer has got the task to port on Linux. It is not first priory task for him, but I think that Linux port will be done at least until V3.

Let me get this straight so that I understand-you will do a Linux port, but not until after v3 is finished?

What Linux distros are you going to support? Might I suggest Ubuntu (Debian) and Redhat for a start?

    Cheers

  6. yeah I wasnt impressed with MB2009's elitist system requirements, they really arent doing their product any favours.

It's like they are really trying to severely limit their market that they already had for MB1. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!

It's one thing if they had a MB 2009 Elitist version that they charged fistfuls of cash to corporate clients. But then they should also have a version that could be used by most users who had a reasonably current PC-say 1-2 years old, 4Gb ram, a decent 512Mb video card; something like that at the least!

  7. To be honest I tried the demo of MB 2009 when it first came out and Thought the sculpting tools were not too bad, then I tried painting and it crashed before I got a single stroke down. After that it would never load again, even after re-installing. I knew Autodesk would screw it up somehow, but I didn't think it would be that bad. VS is better for sculpting anyway, even in the alpha stages.

Also, MB 2009 needs about 10x the computer resources to run as well as the VS in 3dCoat. I have MB 1 and was considering getting MB 2009 until I tried the demo. I'm currently running an Athlon64 X2 4200 with 4GB ram and an ATI Radeon HD 3600 512mb ram video card and win xp home. Pretty average to trailing edge technology.

MB 1 ran great on this system. To run MB 2009 well, I would need a new power supply, NVIDIA Quadro card, win vista 64 or win xp 64 and a ram upgrade of 8-16 GB. Oh, plus the $400 Cdn for the upgrade of MB1->2. Do the math for total cost, but it is obviously prohibitive for many users who are not high paid Weta sculptors or the like.

I fully realize that MB2 has way more features than MB1, but why the heavy requirements when the same things or better can be done with 3d Coat for the cost of the 3dCoat software full or upgrade price?

Autodesk seems to have a knack for turning everything that they touch into major bloatware.

When you compare 3dC to MB 2009, there is no contest-MB2009 looses every time IMHO.

    Cheers all

  8. 3D-Coat works well with wine, but native app is better especially because of 64-bit support.

Porting is not difficult, most of complex work was done during Win->OSX porting, but Mac guy is slightly busy now, so I need to know if Linux market is big enough to ask him to make Linux porting.

Both Maya and Houdini have Linux versions for a start. Plus most Linux versions have 64 bit as well as 32 bit versions.

  9. "Why do they call this a ribbon interface interface? From what you showed it just looks like a Toolbar with a new name! " I totaly agree with this... it's just hype.

Thanks for confirming that I am not always crazy! lol!!! :-)

Was it MS that named it a ribbon interface? If so, that does not surprise me.

    Cheers

    Doug

  10. Have you thought about Ribbon I mentioned soma time ago?

Even MSPaint in Windows 7 will get ribbon interface. Better say, nearly every application in Windows 7 will get ribbbon interface. But of course, its nothing against dockable panels, pie menu etc, it can work together.

And I agree with Artaq and Mantis, its much more logical to have Tools in pie menu rather then Modes. But I know was only a mockup, icons can be anything in the end.

Why do they call this a ribbon interface interface? From what you showed it just looks like a Toolbar with a new name!
