will any of this improve autopo in 3dcoat?

3DCoat on Linux uses the old GTK2 file dialog: no thumbnails, no bookmarks from your file manager, and it looks out of place on a modern desktop. GTK2 can't use the system file chooser (xdg-desktop-portal), so there's no setting to change it. I wrote a small open-source library that fixes this. You load it with LD_PRELOAD, and 3DCoat's Open/Save dialogs then come from your desktop's own file chooser: GNOME's, KDE's, or a file manager that provides one (I use Strata). - Open, Save, Save As and Export dialogs - Starts in the right folder, and Save As fills in the current scene name (scene.obj for an OBJ export) - 3DCoat's file type filters are carried over - If something goes wrong, the normal GTK2 dialog opens instead Setup (Flatpak version): git clone https://github.com/SreckoM/gtk2-portal-chooser.git ~/src/gtk2-portal-chooser cd ~/src/gtk2-portal-chooser && make flatpak override --user --env=LD_PRELOAD=$HOME/src/gtk2-portal-chooser/gtk2_portal_chooser.so com.pilgway.coat Building needs a C compiler and the GLib development package (libglib2.0-dev on Ubuntu). For the non-Flatpak build, the README shows how to add it to your launcher script. I've tested it with 3DCoat 2026.25 (Flatpak) on Ubuntu and Omarchy with Hyprland. If you use a tiling window manager, the README has a window rule so the dialog opens on top of 3DCoat. Repo, details and troubleshooting: https://github.com/SreckoM/gtk2-portal-chooser Feedback from other distros and desktops is welcome. Please open an issue on GitHub or reply here.

sound as a bug for me, reported. thanks for point it up !

Yes, it did work.  one more question, if i activate Hard surface retopology it seems to ignore the minimum required poly and just does 500 polygons for some reason?

CADQuader 2026.10 — Relax and improved quad meshing A new CADQuader build is available. This update focuses on mesh quality around holes, fillets, trimmed surfaces and narrow rims. • Added Relax to equalize mesh spacing within CAD surfaces. Surface boundary edges stay fixed, so Relax does not move the CAD rims. The number of iterations is adjustable; the default is 5. • Improved quad transitions around spherical cavities and filleted openings, including the Ball_Min_Ball_Fillet case. • Improved Var-2 meshing for curved, concave profiles such as Polygon_and_Arc. • Improved trimmed surfaces of revolution, including Revolve_and_Trim. • Added direct quad-strip construction for narrow planar rims, as in Extrude_AndThick, instead of creating a background grid and cutting away most of it. • Improved circular boss caps with central holes. In the NIST test model, the four front caps now use concentric quad rows with transitions between the outer and inner rings, replacing the long triangle fans. Their boundary vertices remain aligned with the adjoining surfaces. There are also interface improvements: a revised Dimension tool, object groups in the Outliner with group visibility controls, and a compact Material Editor that remembers its window size and position. Download the latest Windows x64 installer: https://cad2quads.xyz/ Please use the full 2026.10 installer for this release, then rebuild your Low Poly meshes to see the changes. Thanks for the feedback and test models! If you find another difficult case, please share the CAD file, mesh settings and a screenshot.

Square insert radius issue. On the square insert that I supplied with the round cutout details. When adding a radius to one of the holes and to a wall, both having equal radius. Add mesh quadro, The hole radius does not share the same amount of edge detail as the wall does. The hole radius only has 1 edge detail  where the wall has 5. Both should be the same amount of edge detail.  The round insert works when adding radius detail. Perhaps this will be fixed when correcting the other issue with the square insert?   Test1_radius.step

      Thanks, we’ll work on that.

So far so good on the round. Is there a way to relax and equalize the quads inside of the edges determined to be sharp? Picture below are the CAD quad and from another quad mesher.

CADQuader 2026.09 is now available! Fixed quad meshing for Round-plain.step, with circular support loops, consistent connections when changing density, and regular quad grids on blind-hole bottoms. Added the imported STEP filename to Tool Options. Clarified Mirror axis and plane selection. Expanded the manuals with illustrated icon descriptions and step-by-step Mirror instructions. Please use the full installer to update the application and manuals: Download CADQuader. Thanks for the sample files and feedback!

CADQuader 2026.08 is available! Help → Update now shows the installed and available versions, with Update and Later buttons. Compatible updates download, verify and install automatically, with a prompt to save changes before restarting. If a full installer is needed, the dialog opens the download page. Canceling an update no longer shows an error. The new messages are translated into 14 languages. Download CADQuader

Thank you. We will do just that. The button will behave according to the situation: for a compatible update, it will download and install it automatically, while for a full package, it will open a download page with clear instructions.

Still not getting desired results on this.  You should fix the manual to include detailed instructions on the icons. I couldn't figure out the mirror but didn't give it much effort. Other programs I use the mirror shows the axis to be picked from. Once an axis is picked it will mirror the object. So Im not sure how the mirror works here.   On the tool option the file name should be included to just Imported STEP. Or somewhere to let one know the file your working on. Round-plain.step

Quads connecting to a round item breaks when increasing or decreasing density. Also for me I would rather have the supporting connector(edges) surrounding a round item be conform to round insert not a square. One picture is from the previous version but problem still happens in the latest version. I Like the quad fill in the hole. Test1_plain.step

Be cool if in the help screen on update it would actually update. Or perhaps new version has fixed this?

I've been doing some tests and it actually works on an x11 session. I haven't been able to make it work  in wayland for now.

CADQuader 2026.07 установлен и запущен. Все 14 руководств и языковых файлов установлены. Текст для форума: CADQuader 2026.07 — Low Poly improvements Thank you for your feedback and test models! Version 2026.07 includes several improvements based on the issues discussed here: Collar width control: the new Collar width factor adjusts the width of the band around holes. Collars on both sides: a collar can now also be added to the inner cylindrical wall of supported holes. Quad filling: supported circular caps now use a quad grid instead of a triangle fan. L-shaped regions: improved mesh layout and region subdivision. Circular hole arrays: improved density response and symmetry around holes. On the reported Arr_Circular_In_Revolve example, densities 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 now produce different resolutions while maintaining symmetric transitions. Per-surface density: Additional Params provides U/V division controls for supported four-sided surfaces, with shared edges coordinated across the body. The interface translations have also been updated for all 14 languages. Updated user manuals are included in all 14 languages; press F1 to open the manual for your interface language. Please use the full 2026.07 installer so that the application, translations and manuals are updated together. Download CADQuader and the manuals Please keep sharing your results. If a mesh still looks incorrect, include the model, density and enabled options so I can reproduce it.

I agree. This sometimes happens with the Smart Retopo tool, with the loft or Quadrangulate modes. It requires more tweaks from the user, which is understandable for complex shapes. However, it (preview mesh grid) often gives the results you see in your first example. It's unnecessary, in my opinion to add that extra segment (partial edgeloop) at the bottom, and it requires more unnecessary clicks/time. When you are in a hurry to meet a deadline, and especially if you are behind schedule and trying to catch up, every extra click matters! It should always attempt to generate even rows of edges whenever possible. I also hope that spiraling edgeloops get removed from the algorithms. It's horrible for selecting UV seams, and makes that job 10x harder and longer than it needs to be.
