  1. I'm not sure if this has been mentioned anywhere but it's one thing I find annoying in 3D Coat. The transparent preview of the brush at the cursor is distracting and obscures too much of what you are actually painting on. I assume you can not disable this feature because I see no way of doing it. When you start to paint the preview of the brush and it's contour disappear but I think the ring showing brush radius should also disappear or at least have an option to customize these things. It may also be preferable to disable viewing of the red contour line of the pen. However I do think this is quite a good idea because it gives you feedback on several things about the brush. Other apps have another ring to show a fall off or focal shift (ZBrush for example). Some may prefer that but both ways are OK in my opinion. Since these things are different in 3D Coat and there is quite a lot visually going on around the cursor then I think it should be customizable. I like the mouse and key combinations to control the pen. Those are cool.
  2. I noticed that something else is now working that wasn't before. The menu under view to browse the 3D Coat folders. Unfortunately I have a problem. 3D coat appears to be fully functional except voxel sculpting which did work the first time I tried it but now I get an error message. Since problems like this are likely to be issues with wine, I am not sure if you want me to show you the error or not.
  3. Problem is fixed. Navigation with mouse now works on Linux with 3D Coat 3.00 Aplha40. Also, this version is way better. Faster and more efficient. Awesome app. I absolutely love this. Now to try the volumetric sculpting.
  4. OK. No DX9c was the problem with the DX version. I have 3D Coat working but it's not really usable on that graphics card on my Windows system (too slow). This is the problem in Linux Wine. With 3D Coat, ALT+LMB and ALT+RMB are used for navigation of the 3D space but on Linux those are commands are also used to do stuff with the windows so they clash. I can disable those commands on the Linux windows manager but 3D Coat still doesn't use them. This is not a major issue but it would be improved a little if the navigation popup opened at the mouse when hitting a key command then disappeared if it wasn't pinned when the mouse moved away. That's not such a bad way to navigate. I'm going try the latest Alpha on Linux.
  5. I Just tried to install 3d Coat 2.10.15P2 on Windows. This system doesn't have a powerful graphics card. It's a PIV 3.0 GHz HT. This was just a test to to compare with Linux so I can see any problems. However I could not install 3D Coat. I get this with the open GL version: Default file source is folder "C:\Program Files\3D-Coat-2-10" Added "Bmp" image codec. Added "Dds" image codec. Added "Jpg" image codec. Added "Tga" image codec. Added "Png" image codec. Added "cAnim" animation codec. Added "Md5Anim" animation decoder. Added "Fbx" animation decoder. Added "cModel" model codec. Added "Md5Mesh" model decoder. Added "Obj" model decoder. Added "Fbx" model decoder. Added "cCamera" camera codec. Added "Fbx" camera decoder. ------------------------------------------------------------ Graphics card and driver info ------------------------------------------------------------ OpenGL Renderer Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc. Renderer: RADEON 9200SE DDR x86/SSE2 OpenGL Version: 1.3.4901 WinXP Release Supported: Pixel format Multitexture (units: 6) Anisotropic filtering (level: 16) Texture Compression Vertex Buffer Object Vertex Attributes (count: 32) Unsupported: OpenGL Shading Language Then I get this with the DX version: This application has failed to start because dsd9.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. So Linux Wine - almost perfect. Windows - can't even install. I don't even care because I DO NOT want to use Windows. Many apps I've tried have performed better in Wine.
  6. I'm all for Linux. 3D coat seems OK under Wine but obviously native would be better. It's maybe not so crucial at the moment but the market can only grow. Some well known modeling apps have native Linux versions. I also think 3D coat is an excellent partner for Blender which is obviously widely used on Linux. Since a lot of people on Linux are not spending a lot of money on software then the high cost of apps like ZBrush is off putting. ZBrush does work under Wine but I think the market for 3D Coat could be bigger. I don't see Pixologic developing a Linux version of ZBrush any time soon. It took them long enough to get ZBrush 3 Mac out. I'm sure there is a future market for 3D Coat on Linux. Of course future changes in 3D Coat could break it's functioning under Wine which is the problem. At present, a Linux version could eat into resources for Win or Mac versions so maybe not so important but for the future I'd say it would be very cool.
  7. Some 3D Coat on Linux eye candy. I'm just experimenting with the layered brushes. I have another app working on Wine called Mojoworld which is a fractal landscape generator. It is perfect for making all kinds of textures and pens. Especially good with the layered pens due to the huge fractal control you have for generating variations in the layers. I am very impressed with 3D Coat. The retopology tools alone are fantastic.
  8. Artrage .psd output works for layered pens in 3D Coat. Unfortunately Gimp .psd does not work for some reason but I can work on the file in Gimp then send through Artrage.
  9. It is not a major problem at all but before I get back here I will test it on Windows to see how it should be.
  10. It works. I am running Ubuntu 8.04 and Wine 1.1.8. Testing the 2.10 demo. I also have Windows and Mac systems (Mac is G5 unfortunately). I have not made comparisons with running 3D Coat on Windows yet. My Linux system has a much better graphics card anyway but not a really fast system. 3D Coat performs well though. I see no issues except the ALT+RMB/LMB navigation. It clashes with other windows commands and I can't seem to get around that but not a major issue. Incidentally, if the navigation popup conformed to the way most of the other popups worked - appeared at mouse position then disappeared at mouse leaving, then it would be better. It doesn't work that way. I think all the popups and tools should be that way - a totally empty work space if you want and all tools quickly available as popups. I can understand there will be no official support for running 3D Coat on Linux Wine because of the possible issues but maybe an actual Linux port is a future possibility. It would have no rival on the Linux platform and would be a very nice partner for Blender. I was on the Ubuntu forum just yesterday and there are several threads with suggestions about sculpting apps. Blender does sculpting but it's quite basic. It does work OK though. ZBrush also runs on Linux but with some problems to get it working (licensing for example). I will return to the Ubuntu forum to tell people about 3D Coat. 3D Coat installs and works without any major issues. My graphics tablet works fine. Pressure sensitivity is working.
  11. I agree that 3D coat isn't quite right in that coat doesn't suggest the full 3D nature of the way this app is developing. I couldn't think of anything better though. At the end of the day you will actually be coating the textures around the model for export. Also, the ball looks in the logo looks like it has paint dripping on it which ties with coat OK.
  12. This is actually my first post here. I just kind of stumbled on this thread. First of all - Awesome application! I'm trying the demo now. I love it and it runs on Linux Wine. I use Windows, OSX and Linux but prefer Linux. I've seen a lot of talk about names, web site design etc but I don't see anything particularly bad. The future of software is small companies and open source. Over hyping software can be seen negatively. You want people to sell the software by saying how great it is. No need to spend too much money and time on this. When you first go to the web site, 3D Coat doesn't initially look like a serious heavy weight application used by "pros". This is fine because 3D Coat is not heavy weight. It is fun to use yet very powerful and will be used for professional work. The name is fine. It's not over considered. I like the green colour used everywhere which is something different and the logo is quite noticeable and memorable enough for purpose. Thanks for a fantastic app.
