Symmetry was the culprit, although I don't understand why.

Whenever I try to add primitives in retopo room, it doubles the geometry. You can see in the first pic, sides is set to 8, no caps, no divisions, so the estimated polycount should be 8. It's showing an estimated polycount of 10. You can see in the 2nd pic, when I move a vertex that there is double the geo.

I didn't want to do a full reinstall, and I still had the tar.gz file, so I just put the missing files back where all the other shaders are stored. Everything's fine now. Thanks everyone!

I accidentally deleted my skin shader and now I can't get it back. Restart 3D Coat doesn't reset your shader list and I don't see any way of restoring lost shaders.

Where do you even get the applink now? Pilgway's website leads to dead-ends.
