  1. By tradition, I'm a painter and am just recently trying to learn sculpting. Being a noob, I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to be looking for in these tools. I know that Zbrush and Mud and such don't have the voxel sculpting tools, but what exactly is the advantage for us? Besides the cool snake and spikes I mean...those are obvious.

The biggest advantage is that voxels are like working with real clay. and just like clay we can reshape a voxel sphere into absolutely anything. We can add and remove mass indefinitely. We can take two seperate objects and blend them together seamlessly. This sort of thing is impossible in programs like ZBrush or Mudbox.

It's still early days yet for 3D Coat. But I predict that speed combined with intuitive tools will be its biggest advantage. We're goiing to be able to create a model in a fraction of the time it takes in other programs.

But for now we're just having fun. We're all just big kids playing with playdoh and seeing what we can make. :)

  2. Talking of draw plane....

Wouldn't it be best if we could use the camera's current angle for the draw plane angle?. Much more free flowing?.

I can see how the current fixed method could be quite useful because it means we can take a peek from another angle without losing the plane.

Another idea would be to create a tool that combines '2D-Paint' with 'Carve'. So if we draw on an empty area of the screen then it'll create geometry there. Yet if we draw on the surface then it'll build up the surface similar to Carve. I think this could lead to a really rapid workflow without having to switch tools.

I also agree with earlier posters that say Carve needs to use the depth setting. It can be far too powerful. In earlier versions of 3D Coat I would use 'Draw with Pen', but since that function is now surface based it's no longer useful for building up my model as the polygons become too stretched. This then means that I have to constantly switch to voxel mode and back to surface mode again in order to remove the stretched polys.

  3. Just been testing the new version. There's lots of new bugs introduced but they're pretty obvious and so I wont go into them.

But I just want to say that the new voxel smooth function is totally awesome. It's very strong and gives very fast feedback. I reckon it would be possible to create an entire model with just Carve and Smooth while in voxel mode. It's just like ice sculpting!

    Nicely done, Andrew!

  4. Badly in need of a move brush. Or am I missing something?

Andrew says it's coming. I suspect he is wanting to get the voxel>surface feature working fully first. The Move brush will use the surface mode.

I personally would like to see all brushes work on voxels. I'm not too keen on the idea of switching modes. But I can imagine that creating new brushes for voxels will be quite time consuming. But early days yet.. I've got faith in Andrew. Whatever he does, he'll do it for a good reason :)

  5. I've been pondering over how 3D Coat could work in future. How about use voxels for creating the base model and then use bump maps for the finer details. (Similar to Modo)?.

    As for subdivision levels:

Switching subdivision levels is okay for people with slower machines but I think there are other ways of catering for slow machines. Like having the ability to define areas of your model and then hide those areas when they're not needed.

Subdivision levels are also great for artists in the games industry. These artists are often required to create several levels of detail for their models. I'm not sure if 3D Coat's voxel method would appeal to these kinds of artists anyway. If I was going to make a game asset then I would just use a subdivision based modeler from the start.

3D Coat is really ideal for digital artists that don't want to worry about mesh structure.

  6. Andrew,do you think will be possible working with ellipsoid shape?

I mean, with carve, the brush it's a sphere, even with pressure gives some problem controlling how depth you go.

If the brush can be made elliptical,we can use big radius for surfacing big zone, but without changing too much depth.

I use the 'Draw with Pen' instead of Carve. I think that's basically what you're asking for. Adjustable depth?

  7. Updated. please try.

    That worked! Phew!

    and here she is:

I used 'Draw with Pen' to build the entire model. Carve would've been better but the Smooth function is too weak to smoothen a carved form.

I noticed there's a bug that causes the work space to capture mouse activity through interface items. In other words - if you hold down the Move Camera button the underlying model behind the button will be modified with the current sculpting tool. eek!

I always feel bad reporting bugs so early. I'm pretty sure you're aware of most of the bugs and you're just going through fixing them. :)

I enjoyed making the horse. It wasn't necessarily fast to build, but it was definitely relaxing.

It felt like my right hand was making the horse while my brain had lots of time to think about other things. This is what I think is Voxels strongest feature. It's like doodling with a pencil and paper. You don't have to think about it. You just do it. Most other programs require you constantly think about what you're doing. When using other programs I always feel like I'm a nerdy engineer. :)

  8. Wow! Welcome to the future.

    That volumetric sculpting is unbelievable.

I noticed that there is no Move function for dragging the surface around. I know it's only a beta version but I think I can see why Andrew may be waiting to add that function. After thinking about it I realized that it's not going to be easy to add. Dragging a surface around on a polygon model is easy because the application only needs to change the vertex coordinates. Yet dragging voxels around will be totally different. It's going to be more like dragging pixels around on a 2D image.

Still, well done Andrew!. Pixologic is gonna be worried! Maybe they'll buy 3D Coat and change their name to Voxologic?
