  1. Blimey! Tony N, split ends is going a bit far isnt it? I use the hair tool in Carrara for most things other than hair. ( not any tool on 3dCoat if that is what you meant.) Its great for most fabrics because no fabric is smooth apart from silk I suppose.Little hairs catch the light on a rim of a hat.I even used them for frost once.

  2. Nice work Shawn! :)

I've got a question, When you "baked" that texture....I thought cool, I've never even seen that in Cararra before. I will check it out,but I could not find it.So I paused your vid...would I be correct in saying that "bake" was a plugin? I noticed you had "Anything Grooves" was it that? tell me, tell me, tell me! I would like to see that finished, I will keep an eye on your blog/blogs!

ps I know you are only messing about with this Jet fighter, but it would probably have CSK rivets for smoother airflow :p: ..But then you would not see them would you.....and snap head rivets are cool on stuff are they not!.

( I used to rivet aircraft for a living, many years ago, that's why I am being pedantic!...in a jokey way!)

  3. Pixo, the only compositing I did was combine a depth map,for this I used photoshop. Other than that it is just a straight render in Carrara . As you so eagley eyed spotted the depth map caused a few jaggies.( there is a better version on my blog....with adjusted wing.)

CFK, It was all painted in 3dCoat,but I sort of combined the helmet texture with a Carrara metal preset.I did use Normal maps and Bump. There are a miriad of Normal map errors cos Im sort of bungling through! But because I just render up one or two images you can get way with the mistakes. I dont really sculpt anything round the back cos you aint gonna see it.

My Carrara generated depth map was rubbish, the antialiasing dosn't seem to work. But I got a great tip from the Cararra forum.Render it twice full size, so the jaggies are smaller when it is resized.....duh!

Ps, I hope someone spotted the little hair fibres I put on the string..... ^_^

  4. Thanks Digman,Yes it is a Carrara render. The character is from a movie....I sometimes don't say where from so folks can work it out for themselves.......any ideas....it's really easy!

I tried some DOF on this by using a depth map,I really struggled to find a decent tutorial that made sense....what a nightmare.then as soon as I had finished I noticed that the depth map was not antialiased,so I have a few jaggies.Maybe I will have another go. Carrara has its own DOF, but on the good quality setting,it would have taken a whole day to render!

  5. Yeah thats what I did.....but I put a small ball in it for some bizarre reason!!!In my head I must have been thinking a small ball uses less resources than the original object! What was I thinking...smacks forehead.....it doesn't need anything in it does it! My foreheads getting pretty sore at the moment with all the obviously dumb things I am doing!

  6. Ive just been looking at my exported maps. I have 6 TGA files at 2k each this comes to about 100 mbs!! I use these just because they seem to be the default choice when you export your OBJ.What do you guys use as a preference.Surely JPEG or PNG would be more economical for file sizes? What are the disadvantages...or advantages. I just export them straight into Carrara for rendering.I dont do any fancy layer tricks in Photoshop.

  7. I have a model that consists of about 15 layers.I have taken it all the way through the process and I am currently painting it.I am in the paint room painting my retopoed, unwrapped,UVd model.Back in the voxel room my models are invisible so they do not show in the paint room. That is all fine, The complete file is now around 1gig. Thats rather large i'm thinking.I then deleted all the voxels...I dont need them anymore. ,now i am down to 150mb ...acceptable. But the thing is I can delete all the voxel layers except the last one, that always remains and will not budge! What gives? ( I am not referring to the "Root" by the way)

It is no big problem, just one of the many things don't understand.Anyway I just inserted a tiny ball to replace the last undeletable larger object, and made it invisible.

  8. Thanks AbnRanger....I went back to an old save and and checked to see If I had left symm on or something, but that wasnt it.I think it was a bug ,I was in Surface mode,so I converted to voxels and It cut off sweat as bee honey! Guess It does not like surface on my 'puter.Thats another little workaround to store in my brainbox.

Tony, I think you are correct...all this 3d stuff,is the only thing that keeps my brain lubricated at the moment!

And,good tip about the pose tool Beat!

  9. I've been trying to figure this thing out recently as well! Did what you said AbnRanger and got it sorted.....apart from not being able to cut off one of the sides,it would only let me "nibble " away at it ,if I lassood the whole side ...nada! Still, what I did was just position the side to where I wanted it,then Symm Copy.So I guess you do not have to get rid of one side...but it does look a bit messy when you are doing it....Oh, and I think I had to put it into "Global Space" to keep the symm plane at origin. ......I think thats what I did......cripes I only did it 2 hours ago and Im forgetting already...not sure I am cut out for this.

  10. Here is a little glitch, anyone get this or have any ideas.I use a Wacom Bamboo. If 3DCoat does anything processor intensive,my Wacom becomes unresponsive in certain areas.Usually the Right Mouse Click button! ( my mouse works fine) To fix it I have to press the "FN1" button on the tablet. This minimises 3DCoat....then I press it again to maximise. It works ok then? Very strange.I went thru a period of my Wacom not working at all a while ago.(pre 3dCoat) So I was always having to fiddle about with the drivers. So now it is generally pretty stable, Im loathe to start messing about with the drivers unless I really have to!

  11. I've seen a number of nasty holes and reported them when it caused a crash while I brushed near the holes. What caused them for me was using Crease Clay and then Pinch on the same area. I did find one thing that worked one time, I haven't tried since, but I could right-click the VoxTree layer and pick Close Holes. In previous attempts I tried Close Holes from the Voxels menu and nothing happened.

I did just now notice one minor issue that I'll have to report, the Symmetry plane is single sided.

Hey Phil, It's the backface culling under the view tab to sort out the single sided symmetry plane!

  12. Aargh, you changed threads!...I find all this stuff confusing also...! This is what I did.... went to C:/users/stuart/documents/3dCoat v3/..... then moved everything from the V3 folder to the V4 folder that was next to it. So you are correct phil, its not called User Documents or UserData. Its just called Documents. Sorry for the confusion I was just combining the ultimate destination into one!.... If that makes sense? ( obviously you will not have a folder named "stuart",it will be whatever your user/computer is called.)

Yup I just copied everything from the V3 to V4 folder, everything seem ok,

  14. This is how I would do it.Though I reckon there are usually more than one way. I think basically you should make you primitives a lot bigger to start with, then when you have a applied them, use the Transform Tool to resize it all. I have also just had a thought....I have just put up a question about Curves resolution and it strikes me that this is a similar situation.Try hitting the Res+ button( bottom left) a couple of times before you apply the primative. ( Now I have not tried this at all so I expect a red face on my part) Some one will jump in with the correct solution I am sure!

  15. Here is a question which is partially solved,( well, fully solved I suppose) but I will pick your brains anyway! I have an eyball in a socket and I am using Curves on a new layer to apply a bead of moisture around the rim where the eye meets the flesh. So I put down the curves in the correct place....looks good....then applied it....yikes... really blocky...I guess cos it is quite small. So I finally figured it out, If I hit the Res+ button several times before I apply it,that increases the poly count. But you do not get any indication of how much, its just trial and error. Now this has turned out fine. I was just wondering if there is another way.I tried the Clone Space button but that didnt help...Just wonderin'
