  1. I've sculpted a model, its one humanoid figure. Its 14000000 polys.I retopoed it then unwrapped it and uvd it and painted it/Mormal mapped it. The file size says 850 mbs! This seems a bit excessive to me. I deleted the model from the voxel room and it is about the same. Which parts of 3d Coat use all the memory and is there "good practice" to be economical. By the time i had about a dozen saves I was up to 10 gigs.

  2. I brought it in as an 0bj ( pretty sure the normals were the right way round as it was an obj that I had already textured and used) Then converted to voxels, sculpted in vox and LC, retopoed manually then unwrapped. Like i said I flipped them so everything is fine.Im just curious at what went awry along the way.

( The original OBJ has been "around the houses" its been to HEX, Carrara, Meshmixer,Sculptris, its a sought of a test piece. But ultimately it is just an OBJ. Would flipped normals manifest themselves in Voxels?)

  3. Ive had a bit of bother with this...but I think I have sorted it, but just a question anyway.

In the Prefs you can choose between 3d Max+LW OR Maya for your Normal maps....whats the difference?

I have had it on Max/Lw for my "experiments" I use Carrara for my rendering. My initial imports were a bit weird ,one side of the model seemed to be lit from above while the other side below.I was pulling my hair out over this. Then I noticed some check boxs in the Normal map setting for Carrara .."Invert Colour" and "Flip X" ,checking these two seems to sort it out! Hurrah!! Ive not tried exporting using the Maya setting yet. I suspect this may fix it.

  4. I' ve nothing against zbrush apart from its awful interface, too many buttons and its clinging onto that 2.5 d thingy that probabably no one uses! ( Im glad they finally got a "grid," youve got to know where the floor is!) Im finding 3dcoat fits into that gap between Sculptris and Zbrush. Ive never looked at Poser, isnt it just for content?( all the renders I see with content all look a bit soul less to me.But each to is own.) I like to make every single thing you see in my "art" work,it even niggles me if I use a Carrara "sky" because I did not design it I just "click" it into being. Its a difficult thing to draw the line though, I mean...I didnt write the software so thats cheating as well isnt it. But people who paint dont create ther own paints do they! ( do I sound insane.). I can quite easily take a "Michael 4.0" from Daz,then pose it, and export it to whatever software and resculpt it. Then say look what Ive made! Thats just cheating. If I was working for some games or film company and getting paid to design some characters I would do it at the drop of a hat, because it would just be a job , and time is money. For my stuff the fun is doing and learning , and trying to be creative.( I have made my own "mannaquins")

Normal Maps seem to work ok in Carrara, though Ive only done some simple tests with a "Blob" to see the workflow. Today Im going to try my first serious retopo...what could possibly go wrong. ( I will post the results on my blog at some point)

Rigging in Carrara is pretty basic stuff and does not have many "bells and whistles" ( everything is easy once you can do it)

"a trait of money welfare favored by a gentleman of later years" I like that! Im 51 and sort of semi- retired. ( if anyone offers me work I will consider it ,But I am in no rush to get back on the treadmill thank you very much!) So yes "money welfare" is a priority. The moment anyone offers me money for something done in 3dCoat I will feel obliged to purchase the full version. But for now the hobby version suits me fine.

I still use Meshmixer for gluing on ears.....obviously, ones I made earlier!

I fear this thread as gone off topic, apologies for rambling on.........

Nice Vids on Vimeo by the way! ( I clicked on the "funny voice" one first!)

  5. Thanks! Yeah ,rigging my base model and posing it before sculpting makes you think about the composition early on. But sometimes I wish I could adjust the pose a bit, later on in the process...but a using a rig in a half a million poly Sculptris model does not add up! So hopefully if I can figure out Normal mapping I can sculpt to my hearts content and the rig might behave. Im loving 3dCoat so far and Im hoping to bring back my "Morlock" sculpt I did with more pose -ability and detail. ( and maybe some dismembered "Eloi".....I hope it doesnt upset Mr Shpagin too much :( !)

  6. I' ve just discovered something by accident! Not sure If documented anywhere,I cant find anything.

Anyway, I was messing around with the simulation and I found if you pause it and hit "return/enter" a copy is made in that position, off to one side. And you can keep doing this until you are bored, maybe get some neat fan/costume effects? Anyway I bet you experts already know this.....I was just excited I discovered something for myself!!

  7. Thanks for that, it seems the rules change on a daily basis round these here parts! With this new polypainting thing! At the moment I can only go up to 2k for maps because I am using the hobby licence. Will this mean my normal/AO map will not register my fine detail sculpting so much.I think I saw a tutorial where a model was retopoed and uv d in two parts,so I gues I could have two image maps on one sculpt.I hope to get the full license at some point, maybe I will wait for Vers 4,because I believe you get all point releases in a particular vesion free.So it may be prudent to hang on a bit until I know what I am doing and where I want go with it.

  8. I am basically a brand new user to 3dCoat I bought it for what it could do when I bought it, and I thought this is neat. Then, whats this you are sneaking out on me ...painting straight on the mesh ..wow ! Thats just gravy isnt it?

I really dont know how Mr Shpagin finds the time to deal with it all. Hats off to you Andrew!

( try asking for something for Carrara and see how long you have to wait, then you get something you REALLY dont need or want!)

  9. I am currently resculpting a figure I did last year in Sculptris. And I am wondering about workflow in 3dCoat. Here is what Ive done. It is a sort of caveman ( Morlock from The Time Machine) Ive sculpted the body, its about 10 million tris in LClay, now I am starting to sculpt in wrinkles and creases. 10 mill does not seem to be quite enough for the detail I am after. If I go higher is this "bad practice" OR Is it the done thing to do tiny details in the bump map when I paint ( like I did in Sculptris ) I think I prefer sculpting them now, because it seems like the right time to do it....rather than retopo and unwrap, then doing a bit of extra "sculpting" with the bump.

What sort of "amounts of triangles" do you guys generally work to? I think I accidently made a "blob" 37 million, it sort of worked but was a bit sluggish. And on another occasion I tried to put in a primitive "free patch" which made me go out of memory!

    ( Vista Utimate 64, nvidia gt 9800 512ram, 8 gigs main ram)

ps the original "Morlock" is on my blog somewhere( May 2011) , if anyone is interested or got a suggested workflow.....

  10. Hi,

Is there a way of getting your shader of choice to appear on a voxel object straight away. I deleted a few shaders that I would definately not be needing while I learn. ( not sure how to get them back later though!)

So know when I start a new voxel shape ,it starts with that "rocky one with the green moss" and I have to change it to a basic shader. Can I make it choose the one I actually want straight away?

Edit: ooohh, think I have found it! right click on shader reveals optiions!

  11. Right, I'm missing something here .I load up a picture for the ref image. But all that happens is that I can paint on it. I cannot even touch the voxels? Plus there is a yellow rim around it, that is not indicated in the PDF.

Am I supposed to "lock" the image somehow before I begin sculpting?

  12. Ok, I getting to grips with the software,so I thought I would try and "customize" the interface.

Q1. I will never bother with most of the Shaders, so I tried to delete some of them. They dont seem to want to go .I select the delete option but no joy. ( I can remove brushes ok)

Q2. I tried to save my Layout.... it defaults to a folder in the main 3DCoat folder, which is fine, but a pop up says I dont have "administrator" privelidge. So I have to pop it in another folder some where else. I would like to pop it in the Layouts folder just for convenience.

  13. Hi, I ve just got 3dCoat( EDU version) So I am just finding my feet with it so to speak. What I am curious about at the moment ,is upgrades . According to the Help tab in the software you can check for updates...it says I am up to date (3.701b) which is fine. When I hover my cursor over the downloads at the head of this thread it says 3.702C, but I believe this is a beta and that I am running the "stable" version? What do folks do about this....do you download the latest betas? And does this just replace the version you are running or do you have then 2 versions running? And how often are the betas updated, should I come back often to check or would I be on some sort of Email list informing me.

  14. There is ALWAYS gonna be a newer version just around the corner! Why not wait for Version 5 cos that will be even better than 4 ! I got the EDU version to tinker with in a hobby sort of way. That way I can see if I can figure it out, at a reasonable price, and I can upgrade later if need be. Im sure there will be good deals to be had down the line......maybe next xmas? or a summer sale?

The retopo tools are miraculous.I usually uv in Carrara and more recently ,really lazyly in Sculptris. But 3DC seems to do it all without much effort and neater! 80 of your Earth Pounds well spent.......
