Ambient Occlusion Paint

One thing i loved when i was trying mudbox was its realtime Ambient Occlusion. it was faked but it looked good. When im painting textures i tend to use the Occlusion function in 3DC quite a lot but I normally have to go around cleaning up the direct shadows which is a pain.

What i was wondering is if it would be possable to calculate screen space AO and paint it onto a mesh as I worked. Allowing me to be selective about the occlusion. This may be a bit of a hair brained idea but i thought i'd post it and see :)
