Import reference object for painting

Yeah, I can put them together beforehand, but then they're treated as one - with one ptx map. Which wouldn't be that bad, because I could delete the needless objects afterwards, but then I would have to go for a bigger map resolution to cover the needless objects too, or must select and increase the resolution on the object I want to paint till it takes over the whole map. Is there a way without such workarounds?

edit: Oh, and no moving around. It's a steady position.
