3D coat to Photoshop painting problem

I've been searching for a software that is good and easy to use on painting diffuse map to models and recently I saw this video tutorial from slipegatecentral -

(this is the video) and I thought this is what I want. So I digged into deep paint 3D and it turns out that it couldn't work with photoshop cs4... maybe work with earlier versions but I am not sure. Slipegate skipped how he import/exported and switch between programs, and there are so few information about DP3D could be found on internet. And next fellows in Polycount introduced me 3D coat and said the software could do the same thing... so here I am.

I downloaded the trail version and tried according to the video tutoril found on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg5XI5dGnZY. And everything worked the same...as well as the color bleeding problem. I am wondering if there is an option to turn it off? It is quite annoying for it to destroy everything behind the surface. Here are some screenshots I took from test draw :

As you can see below, the colors not only affecting the areas I drew on but also leaking out to the surface behind and beside the drew area.

also is there a funtion to project wireframe with the layers onto photoshop? It would be much easier to draw. If you noticed some 4+ sided face in this screenshot, they weren't there before importing to 3D coat. Would 3D coat mess up edge loops from original files? Or there are some options to tweak?

sample04.jpg

And I would like to dim down the light value simply because it is erasing the shades of geometry and makes me hard to draw. The side been lit up is washed with plain white.(i would need to turned the layer ability to normal and tuned down opacity to about 30% in order to have the lightmap less effective on the drawing layer).

In addition, is there an option to adjust the image size project on photoshop? The defult size is 1680 x 990 and I would like to draw on a larger canvas such as 2400x200 for example.

Lastly, if there are any video tutorial or text tutorials about how to make 3D coat paint like Deep Paint 3D (I am sorry to make this comparison at this forum but this best illustrates my needs...)

Please tell me and I really want to learn to paint good texture.

Which version of 3DC are you using? The very latest is here

Do you have 'Edit > Project through' checked?

Is this in Photoshop?

  • Yes - Adjust the Lightmap layer opacity or run Levels on it to lessen the effect (you could make an action to automate this)
  • No - Either; 'View > Flat Shade/Smooth Shade/Low Smooth Shade' or adjust the ambient light intensity and Primary light intensity in the scene.3DC_Lights.jpg

Would 3D coat mess up edge loops from original files?

No 3DC doesn't mess up your topology. It's just a visual artifact that's been in 3DC for as long as I can remember.

In addition, is there an option to adjust the image size project on photoshop?

Why would you need to paint at such high resolution? It's not likely that your end texture sheet would even hold that level of detail unless it's not for games and you're creating textures for a render.

1. oh this really helped a lot now. Although there are still minor bleeds but if I seperate meshes to multiple objects and draw each individually then I think it is do-able.

Oh... this leads to another question, how to import multiple objects into 1 scene? It seems to be close the current and open up new one.

2. Yes I am projecting to photoshop. Too bad there's no better way to do it. I turn down the opacity and changed it to normal ability. The result is better but still is covering up my layer. also it is influencing my color pick ups because the eye dropper picks up the color on the canvas not the color of the layer. Do you have a better way to work around it? Right now I am working on it as to close light map, draw a bit, then open it up to see to correct my strokes, then repeat ... :s

3. I see, as long as the original file stays same and it is good.

4. Yes I usualy like to zoom in to draw fine details and for the defult resolution I would be at pixel painting stage by just zoom in a couple times. Which is too zoomed in.

In addition, is it possible to have the wireframe be projected on to photoshop along with the mesh screenshot? If so it would be awesome and much easier to draw.

Lastly thank you for answering my questions.

Just replied on the Polycount forum with some photoshop actions that might ease the process of projection painting for you.

Hi, I downloaded the .atn file from that hyperlink but I opened nothing from its recommanding software photoshop. Would you mind to also give me the link to the thread you replied to?

Thanks a lot for all the helps ^^

Edit: oops... photoshop actions... I actualy have never used photoshop actions to do any photoshop works. Always stright to paint. Let me figure out how to do.

Thanks, and sorry for misunderstanding. And I've found your reply thanks.
