  1. I remember reading something about Vista, when it first came out, about it allowing a user to make use of flash drives to boost Vista performance. I dismissed it as just something gimicky, with no real substance to it, but I remember Andrew mentioning some tips about optimizing performance for 3DC, some of which involved setting the pagefile/scratch disk up with plenty of space.

Recently, I put my 4GB USB thumb/flash drive in, and saw the prompt to allow it to be used for "ReadyBoost"...I set it up and did a little research online to see if there was anything to it. While there are tests that will seem to show little to no benefit, I think it's rather misleading. What it does, it does well...that is to allow fast caching for your pagefile data. Vista will choose which is faster, sequential data from your HD pagefile, or random read/writes that is much faster using the flash memory. I downloaded a little ReadyBoost Monitor and it's working it's fanny off while doing a defragment of my main diskdrive...plus it works hand in hand with Windows SuperFetch utility....making programs load noticeably faster.

It's not a direct replacement for RAM, but it does speed some things up, and I think it can only help improve the performance of 3DC, as much as it pushes the limit and relies on the pagefile. In Windows Task Manager, in the Performance Tab, you can click on "Resource Monitor" and see how much is actually being read/written/cached to your flash drive and HD pagefile. Pretty interesting stuff. Maybe Andrew can chime in here and let us know to what extent using "ReadyBoost" can help when using 3DC.

This is an informative article on the issue, and this quote is perhaps gets to the heart of the matter...."Q: How much of a speed increase are we talking about?

A: Well, that depends. On average, a RANDOM 4K read from flash is about 10x faster than from HDD. Now, how does that translate to end-user perf? Under memory pressure and heavy disk activity, the system is much more responsive; on a 4GB machine with few applications running, the ReadyBoost effect is much less noticable."

  2. kenmo, the file is 3.7GB, not 1.1GB. You should try to resume your download as you don't have the full file.

Also, why waste your time with winrar? Use an open source program that is FREE and doesn't have any hiccups like winrar... I am talking about 7Zip of course. You'll find it to be much better then winrar.

PS- My name is Javis. Pronounced like -JAY-VIS. FYI. ;)

That's what it is...you'll get that error message everytime if you don't have the full download
  3. Yes definitely. I really think it would look great if the image was cleaned up.

I look forward to seeing your tests Don, will you be sharing your progress? I am very curious to see how it goes!

Yes...I'm going to try it out on the new Camaro. Been planning on modeling it for a bit. I'd like to see how it works out.
  4. If you think for computing, then if Andrew rewrite the core from CUDA to OpenCL, then OpenCL itself will handle multi-GPU support.

If you think for displaying, I think it's to necessary, as displaying of trinagles isn't bottleneck of 3D Coat now.

As far as I know none of 3D modelers in the market today supports multi-GPU displaying.

From the aftermath of Siggraph 09, it sounds like NVidia is trying leverage multi-GPU's for it's rendering platforms...Mental Ray and IRay. For now, only games benefit from multi-gpu's
  5. If you knew how many people we catch trying to share a download link with friends... asking us for another set of downloads only to get a report that they actually sent the link to a friend in another city, state, country.

It is disgusting and only hurts the industry you are in. I am sure Andrew can speak to this a little bit as I am sure he deals with piracy as well. It is not fair to Javis and others to have their hard work simply stolen and then you have the nerve to pop back in here asking him for support for your stolen tutorial.

Come on now....tell us how you REALLY feel. :D
  6. Updated to 3.00.08N

    Changes:

    - Finished baking shaders to texture in DP mode. The most work was in tweaking shaders setting. Shaders color baking is introduced everywhere - in microvertex baking and texture baking tool.

    - Drag&drop for layers done. Layers cam be moved between each other or to trash. Use ALT+drag layer to duplicate layer

    - support of triangles in topological symmetry tool for per pixel painting. Till this time only quads was supported correctly.

    - Bottom panel for vox tree. It looks similar to layers bottom panel, trash supports drag&drop too. http://bit.ly/mFUxU

    - Estimated polycount in merge tool - to get to know how much polygones will appear in scene after merging the object.

    - Estimated polycount is implemented for the sketch tool too.

    - Important improvement- when object will be merged first in voxel tool user will be asked if initial scale and translaton should be perserved. In so way scale and position of initial object will be preserved on all stages - export raw mesh, retopo object, painted model.

    - ortho-projection issues in retopo tool fixed

    - Symmetry plane and ALT-TAB issue fixed

    - Long paths in input fields will be truncated from the beginning, not from the end. In so way file name will be visible better. In case of truncating hint will show full path. Also I implemented RMB menu in that file control to be able to open file or browse containing folder. It is important for render and baking.

    - I made other approach to solve UAC problem - if 3DC is not run as admin by some reason, 3D-Coat will work but show warning at the start.

Thanks for the update Andrew...very helpful improvements. While I'm at it, can you PLEASE enable a true "FIT IN THE VIEWPORT" function? This is one of the most basic navigation functions, and available in E-V-E-R-Y 3D application out there.........except 3DC. Can we please correct this?

Maybe its a bug, cause someone mentioned that hitting the HOME key would do that. It doesn't. It just pops into some default starting position. For example....after you zoom out and examine the whole model, it's much quicker to hit the shortcut key to immediately fit the model to the viewport boundary, than it is having to manually zoom in every time. In ZBrush...it's the "F" key...same in Maya. Max, it's the "Z" key, and it has it's own icon in the UI too. The 3DConnexion SpacePilot and Explorer have quick navigation buttons (Left, Right, Front, Top and FIT). I use the FIT command (mapped to the "Z" key) every few minutes in 3ds Max, but have nothing to map it to in 3DC.

  7. In cinema 4d it works like the old way, if i like to lock it to axis , i just go in to 3d conections control panel.

It works for both ways now, so great work Andrew.

I'm sorry, but if you can lock the y axis in the 3dConnexion control panel, then why did Andrew need to enable it in 3DC? Why not just tell us it can be done that way and save himself some time? Please...enlighten us on just how you lock the y axis from flopping around however it pleases when you twist the knob just to spin the model. Have you seen LJB's videos showing how frustrating it was the "old" way? You LIKE for the model to flounder around on its own? http://vimeo.com/5799753
  8. polyxo, Yes, that is worth mentioning. I will probably put that as text in the FAQ for the tool as well. The tool is still not finalized yet so when I do another video it will have it too. ;)

I like to give a few examples so people know what to expect. Black and white = Good results. Grey = Bad results!

Personally, I think it's just common sense when trying to work with something like a car, that you would want to go into Photoshop and "Fill" in everything inside the silhouette, and if something like the tires (for example), is going to be obscurred/hidden in one view, it's better to just remove it in Photoshop.

I think it could work great for auto's...especially for game assets. Should be able to retopo low poly and then take it into your 3D app and tweak the shapes and chamfer/fillet/bevel all the sharp edges. Looks like a Car model could be done in 1/3 of the time it would normally take. I definitely plan to test this soon.

  9. Where is this exchange Library? Would like to have a look myself.

    Cheers

    Mike R

In these forums, you have a handful of main categories. Resources & Development is the 4th one down. The exchange Library is the last sub-category. You have to be logged in to see it (I guess it's not visible to just passersby, but members of this forum).
  10. Hi guys!

Just buying license and trying retopology tools. OH! Its so cool!!! I must say its best I ever use! I'm topogun betatester and must say that in 3D-Coat its even better )

    Congrats Andrey!!

Welcome aboard. Make sure to check out the free assets available to you in the "3D Coat Exchange Library" in the "Resources & Development" section here.
  11. is there anyway of scripting 3dcoat?

I was wanting to write a a maxscript for 3ds max that would allow data exchange with 3d coat, but for it to work, scripting would be neccesary

    Raj

That would be sweet. If there was some way to create a LIVE link from 3DC to Max's Material Editor like you have with Combustion, you can imagine how nice it would be to see your texture painting and displacement maps update in realtime, either with the new viewport enhancements or in VRay RT or FinalRender's new IPR that comes with R3 (being shown at Siggraph).

Example of the live link painting between Max and Combustion

  12. Actually, UAC should be stripped out of windows and a better solution put in place or sought after. It's worthless rubbish. All it ever does it cause problems. Frankly, I have it turned off and don't ever plan on using it.
My sentiments exactly. In fact, it's that element alone that gives Apple ample opportunity to poke fun at the pudgy Windows/PC geek in those commercials. :)

Google search "disable UAC" and you'll find instructions how to do so

  13. You may not know it but if you have an nVidia 8800 GTS you also have a Quadro. I just briefly heard about this soft-mod but it supposed to give a big improvement for 3D apps. Here's a couple of tutorials. Do it at your own risk of course, but I understand its fairly safe.

Doesn't work with new cards, aye?
  14. This feature make texturing much easyer.

    1. Make voxel model from different voxel objects, for example: hull is one, details - second. Apply shaders of different colors on objects.

    2. Make retopo, uv.

    3. Retopo -> bake for per pixel painting with normal maps.

Now you got nice base for your texture, with separate objects colored with different colors. You can use them as masks, blend to texture layers to color them, etc. No need to carefuly divide details apart by hand.

And you got nice procedural noise and cavity, so shader no more just toy, but tool for make texturing base.

Thanks for the explanation...this is what I was talking about. A small paragraph summary and placed either in a text document named "Beta Build Notes" or something similar, and placed at the end of the manual with each build, placed in the User Data directory in the installation, or in a Pinned thread titled "Beta Build Notes." Maybe a screen capture taken as they run final tests. I know this is likely to introduce a massive disturbance in the space-time continuum, but hey...a guy can ask, can't he?

Just asking Andrew to throw us a bone...those of us who recently bought in and have yet to reach Jedi Master status in the 3DC universe :)

My workflow is not so linear... actually...

I remember making yestrday's build... It was very late and in very last minute because all was not smooth. My family was waiting for me, so I had not even extra second (thanks to kindness and patience of my wife).

Why I hurried? Because next week my upload capability (only mobile internet in country house) will be limited essentially and I found errors in previous build that must be fixed.

So I have not made demo video :)

No problem, Andrew....I was just making a request along those lines cause it gets so frustrating to hear the guys who have used the program for a long time to go on about how great a new tool works, and I can't even find any info on it. Thanks again for the SpacePilot/Navigator fix.....that makes navigation so much smoother. :good:
