  1. Ahh, Muscles is reminiscent of when I saw in the zspheres 2 video. Very tricky. ;)

    good one...

It's a modification of the spike tool...with kinda different shape. Not too useful for me because of difficulty to achieve exact movement and positioning. Would be great if the tool would have some kind of surface detection to put the strokes upon exissting objects easily like the toothpaste tool. This is very cool and handy...Have you tried to subtract a toothpaste stroke? Gives some nice results...

    Thx again Andrew!

  2. You've got me thinking - Would it be good if there was a special type of smart 'skeleton' object you could create from a hierarchy of geometry and/or curves? Something you could pose at any time and when sculpting would provide a solid base for sub-objects.

Posing the skeleton bones at a later date might possibly even work with a simple distance based weighting, but even without this I think it would be import to be able to move it around and add to it later on.

So, basically something like the curves tool, but "persistent", ie. the ability to revisit and add / transform it later on.

Right...this was requested sometimes before in the forum...Can't imagine how it will work exactly...beause painting voxel strokes depending on pressure upon existing voxel structure is actually possible...as I said...I'm curious...next release will bring it to us...

  3. @AndrewShpagin

"Muscle tool done. This tool will allow to create muscles easily and grow model just from skeleton. Shape of muscle will depend on pressure."

Wow, this took me by suprise! Creating muscles as a sub-object of a base skeleton sounds great.

What would be the best way of making a skeleton? running a vertibrae object along a curve?

I hope someone will make a "Muscle" texture shader - although I guess that would be hard without an idea of end points for creating UVs?? I guess you could make a generic "meat" looking effect though?

Can't wait to try this! (and also to see a video of someone using it well  )

Mmmh, what kind of skeleton? Curves? I'm curious too...

  4. For a software that I haven't paid for upgrades for in over 6 years I'd say pixologic is more than entitled to make their marketing as slick as they want. They already got me as a customer a long time ago so whatever it takes to get new ones is fair game for them.

As an existing zb user who has used zspheres quite a bit already this is pretty impressive stuff, and I didn't even listen to the voice in the vid. I'm just talking about what I saw. Zspheres are what I was using before 3dcoat as I wanted to find a way to have to do less polygon modeling up front. Voxels definitely trumped the old zspheres in terms of potential. But the new stuff looks as if it may just leapfrog voxels. I won't be sure until I use them myself though. Whatever flaws they do have I'm sure I'll find them. One thing I know I won't do is favor any app in particular due to customer loyalty or not having bought the other. I'll simply use what I think is the best tool for the job. Advantages of having both and not caring who wins any software wars.

Zbrush should very much be talked about in this forum. It is the only real competition to 3dcoat as far as sculpting goes. A lot of what is in 3dc now is there because zbrush users asked for it too.

    well spoken! :good:

  5. zBrush is market leader for a reason. It may have a weird UI but the features are Damn good. Something that annoys me with 3DC is often things dont feel finished. I guess thats the price we pay for direct access to betas. When I demoed Mudbox last I was dissapointed by the lack of functionality but one thing that hit me was that it felt Solid. I'd happily sacrifice some of the newer 3DC features for something faster and more polished.

    +1

  6. Where did you hear me knock ZB regarding its merits. I just happen to think their new feature videos is a lot to do about very little. I could see if they covered every new feature in one video, but they make a major deal out of every single one in their own separate video. Have you ever listened to a new or used car salesman? You know then how much of a production they make out of every little thing on a car. Pixologic is the same, in my opinion. I guess you happen to eat it up...that's fine, but from my vantage point, it's super-cheesy.

Mmmh no...it is not a "very little" feature they've implemented and pushed a lot, it's a new sculpting and rigging technique in ZB based on ZSpheres. By the way, this is not the only new feature they've promoted.... And don't forget, this update is free so they do the videos not for sale primary but for informing the users about new features coming. It's like the car salesman will promote a new car that he will give to you as a gift because you've bought your old one in his shop...

I don't know why you always be that harsh...ZB lovefest....come on man, relax! We're talking about features...you're talking about fighting...this is no battlefield, it's 3D sculpting...

As you can see in my previous post I referred to your thread to push 3DC video forward...so I'm on your side... :air_kiss:

    Rene

  7. :drinks: :drinks: :drinks:

Yeah..please no fighting..those features are cool.It is not something

to dismiss.I agree tough that 3DCoat needs crazy good timelapses made by very experimented artists in the game industry. It would help a lot.

(and Cuffins Ive seen some pretty harsh comments from zb users about 3DCoat too...I guess it is a geek thing, like xbox vs ps3...I mean one can get both ,so why fighting)

    Right... :good:

I think that should not that hard to do... Because we're talking about timelapse videos of an App it's easy to get some nice video material. But we would need some cool music and voice(s) too. And not to forget...kinda script. AbnRanger has started a thread about this. Maybe he should give it a more content related name and we can collect all good ideas there?

    What do you think?

    Rene

  8. Pixologic's Marketing machine. They could promote a stale, moldy slice of bread. They use this "What if you could" and "Freedom" theme for every new feature. They also use sped up time-lapse footage to convey how speedy it is, when it may or may not add that much to your workflow. Well "What If" Andrew did the same thing for every new feature he added? I suggest fighting fire with fire.

I think maybe Andrew should contract Leigh (JLB), who has the voice to do so, in my opinion...to create a similar marketing video that follows a similar theme...."Imagine if you could...combine the freedom of CG Clay, using cutting edge voxel technology, with industry leading Texture Painting, Retopology, and UV layout tools (I understand Andrew is working on upgrading this)...all in one extremely affordable application?" And have it incorporate fast time Lapse footage as well...with screen shots showing the UI customization abilities along with other features with a high "coolness" factor.

Give Pixologic a heavy dose of their own medicine...after all, they are using Andrew's "Freedom" theme in reference to Voxels. A good marketing video that can be linked to and added on YouTube, Vimeo, etc., lets the community spread the message, without heavy advertising costs.

What say ye, ladies and gentlemen?...Andrew?

To much aggressive words for me...no comment... 8)

  9. Pixologic could market the dickens out of a moldly slice of bread.
Yes, as someone who was curious to see what they were offering in this new update I felt like my intelligence was insulted by their 3.5 vids. I would love to see that done.

I learned my lesson well not to talk to much about an other 3D sculpting application in this forum, which is right...in some strange kind of sight. But come on guys, did anyone of you ever switched that thing on you're talking about? If not, please don't flame an App you didn't really know! I'd read many forum posts in ZB Forum about 3DC and be sure there were NEVER such negative posts. It's up to you "fighting" for 3DC in the way you want but please do a fair one! I'm a ZB user over years and I love 3DC too. Why not taking out the best of both? For me there is no reason for fighting one against the other...

  10. cuffins. Go to Preference settings and set Gimp to be your external 2d-editor. That should work. In my /usr/bin folder

there is gimp-2.6 and gimp files. And gimp worked with my case.

that' s exactly what I've done...but nothing happens when I click edit in external editor...there is also an out of memory error when I try to load one of the predefined objects for per pxel painting...sometimes 3DC is crashing. I'm using the 64 bit version...

  11. This was requested months ago and is highly needed. Now that 3.1 is out I hope Andrew get's a little time to sort through the many Feature Requests and can filter out the most important ones for implementation into 3DCoat. :)

why don't you click the square in the voxel dialog? You get an empty scene...what's the problem? I like it as it is... :good:

  12. Dont buy it until you've tried it. ZB has a doozy of an interface. it can be a real deal breaker.

Mmmh, I think, this is one of the best Interfaces on the market of 3D Applications because....it is totally free configurable. If you don't like a menue...build your own. There is no other application offering this freedom I know...

  13. only a suggestion...a reordering of Buttons for switching between the different "rooms" in a more logical manner. In most cases the workflow will be sculpt -> retopo -> uv -> paint -> render exept for qauadrangulation or baking. Here is a picture for illustration:

    post-1630-1251402770_thumb.jpg

As you can see "Voxel" Tab is gone... in my oppinion the little bunch of "sculpting tools" should reside in paint-menue to make things clearer especially for beginners...

    greez, Rene

  14. Ah, if it was a snake it would've bit me :)

I've never noticed that little fly-out menu, I've always just right clicked the pens.

    You learn something new everyday.

    Thanks!

    Jeff

Mmmh, there is no such menue entry in my Version... I'm using Win32 without CUDA. Anyone with same problem??

Ahhh, I've found the reason...It only works with a new pen folder...mmmh maybe there should be a hint about this?

  15. Hi there, when in voxel-mode you can extract-skin by right-clicking the Voxtree in lower-right corner menu.

You might be interested in my thread showing a .stl model printed out by Shapeways. It actually arrived today! http://www.3d-coat.com/forum/index.php?sho...amp;#entry27371

    Anyway good luck

Hey Ghostdog thx for the tip! Didn't know this before...As 3DC can export .stl directly, is it possible to use this model for 3d-Printing without any conversion?

  16. I used the rapid brush, it's quite hard-edged. In fact, pinching is exactly what I did as well to get sharp borders. Anyway, I'll do more tweaking.

    Sad_Dog_3_by_ShnitzelKiller.png

Maybe I'll go for a freakish look, then he's got a reason to be sad.

A hint...don't let your skills decide what kind of dog you'll sculpting. If it doesn't look the way you like don't say..."okay now I'll go for a freakish look" that's the easy way. Try to reach your goal! Take as much references as you can get. Put them in 3DC and you will see whats wrong. Never give up tweaking until it looks like the dog you had in mind...And believe me it will cost a hundreds of digital dogs lifes before you are satisfied. Trust me, there are hundreds of heads in my cellar :D

And the most important thing...believe in yourself! If you think you never can do a good dog in 3DC, you never will. But be critical to your self and follow the crits of the experienced users...

    Have fun!

  17. It seems that many people don't know what's the difference between Resolution and Density in Voxel mode of 3D-Coat. Let me explain:

What's the difference between Density and Resolution ?

Suppose that a Voxel object is combined of 10000 small voxel unit.

    1. Change Density will simply change the scale of the object in current space(please note each space/volume has it's own density). It will not change the number of it's voxel unit.

For example decrease Density twice will result in: Object size will twice as big as initial, but the number of it's voxel unit will not be changed, still keep 10000.

    2. Change Resolution will change the actual number of it's voxel unit. For example degrade resoluion twice will result in: The number of it's voxel unit will become less, may be only 5000 left or even less.

How can I change Density and Resolution in Voxel?

    1. Change Desnsity is quite easy. Just right click on corresponding "Volume" in VoxeTree panel, then choose "Decrease object 2X (increase density)" or "Increase object 2X (decrease density)".

    2. You can increase the Resolution of voxel object by click "Inc. res" button in the left tool panel.

In current version(3.00.08), there is no perfect way to decrease resolution, but don't worry, it's on the to-do list.

Right click on "Volume", there is a commond named "Clone and degrade", it acts just like decrease resolution, but will create a new object(Volume) instead.

So what's on earth it is?

In shorty, Density in Voxel just like Scale in polygon world. Resolution in Voxel just like Subdivision in Polygon world. Not exactly, just a comparison.

Below is an example shown as picture:

    1. The fisrt picture shows decrease resolution.

    2. The second picture shows decrease density.

    Hope this helps.

Thank's for the great explanations! :clapping:

But what is this all for? I mean which kind of workflow can I achieve with this? Let's say I'm sculpting a head...To raise the amount of detail I have to increase resolution. Why should I go back any level whith the effect of loosing detail?
