  1. I'm down with that! I am usually quite obsessive/compulsive about having no UV overlap; I'm surprised this got by me. Thanks again! Excelsior! Eric Kunzendorf Jacksonville University
  2. Bingo! That got it. There was actually a long thin polygon attached to the thumb of the hand that I had imported as an obj. Now, here is the REAL question. Does anyone know what caused it to begin with? And does this happen often with imported obj files? I checked the mesh in Maya, and while it was opened at the wrist, there seemed to be no lamina or stray polys. I did notice there was one slightly overlapping UV, but that is all. Any ideas? 3. Thanks to Tony, I went back and realized that I hadn't clicked the reverse symmetry direction checkbox and clicked the symmetry button in the Retopo groups window. And it WORKED!! And there was great rejoicing. Then I unwrapped and updated the islands and got the image below in the UV preview. Note that all the islands are in the upper left and a diagonal line runs across the UV preview window as shown in the attached image. Anyone have any ideas? Excelsior! Eric Kunzendorf
  4. Hi Tony, I tried that and it didn't work. The further weirdness is that I can mark a seam on the top of the hand with no UVs and one part of the top of the hand, the island will show while on the other it won't. And if I get rid of the seam, the part that appears suddenly disappears. Excelsior! Eric Kunzendorf Jacksonville University
  5. I have a character model that I sculpted and retopologized. (Retopo is a dream compared to Maya). Started specifying seams got the model seamed then realized that one particular island-the top of one hand, isn't showing either in the UV preview when I am specifying seams or as an island when I unwrap. I am splitting the hand like a clove with a seam that runs all the way around the sides and tips of the fingers. No matter what I do, I can't get it to show up. Now here is the kicker: it shows up on the right hand! Everything seams fine there, but the right hand...no joy. Any ideas? Excelsior! Eric Kunzendorf Jacksonville University.
  6. This is one that everyone probably knows, but it caused me to pull hairs for a while. Cut&Clone cuts the mesh and allows you to merge it onto another layer while Split allows you to split a voxel directly into two layers. Both can use the curve drawing method very effectively. But by default there is an overlap when you do this. The split or Cut&Cloned object is larger than the hole you would expect. Well... I was trying to split or C&C some elevators out of an airplane wing and it was driving me nuts. The solution: In the Split tool, there is, in the upper left hand corner of the screen, a little attribute called Split Border Width. Guess what it controls? It is set to 3 by default. Set it to 0 to get rid of the border. It also applies to the Cut&Clone tool as well. Hope this helps save some hairs . Excelsior! Eric Kunzendorf Jacksonville University
  7. Jing is great, but the 5 minute limit is a problem. If you are on a mac, let me suggest Snapz Pro X. It is a bit pricey at $70. But it does a good job of recording large screen shots and recompressing them. I have recorded 20 minutes of 800 x 600 at 8 fps and had no problems; the compression through Quicktime is quite good too. Exelsior! Eric Kunzendorf Jacksonville University
  8. Both worked! That is a REALLY tiny arrow! The "To Global Space" command worked, but I'll file the second just in case. BTW, I think you and I met at Siggraph at the 3D Coat booth. But I have another problem, the Copy brush doesn't work anymore. It is giving me one brush stamp and then nothing. Usually placed in the center of the view. Symmetry doesn't matter. Any ideas for why this is happening? I am working on a Mac on my laptop with only two gigs of Ram. So memory might be an issue. Anyway, thanks and have great day! Excelsior! 9. Hello All, My name is Eric Kunzendorf, and I teach Animation at Jacksonville University. I am new to 3d Coat. I am following Leigh Bamforth's head tutorial on Vimeo, and I am having a problem with Symmetry Planes. The original skull object I imported into 3DC as an obj which I exported from Poser (I know, I know...:S). When I activated the symmetry plane, it was off center, so I moved it to the centerline of the model. The problem is that whenever I use the copy brush, the voxels copied are slightly off center. Furthermore, I used the Sphere brush to do the eyeballs and they were WAY off center. Now, when I try to adjust the symmetry plane on the skull layer, then adjust symmetry on the eyelid layer, the original skull symmetry plane snaps back to where it was originally. When I put the skull layer plane in place, it snaps the eyelid plane back to where it was previously. Also, somehow, I have lost the tool list down the left side of the window. I keep having to use the spacebar and pin the palette. How can I bring back the tool list? I have tried to reset the interface, but it won't bring it back. Am I doing something wrong? Finally, it is sometimes common to delete prefs in other apps. Is there a way to do this manually on OS X? Thank you in advance, and have a great day! Excelsior!
