How to avoid automatic booleans

I'm trying to model an hair braid and trying doing so with the curve tool.

I created three curves waving and crossing each one (trying to avoid surface crossing but it's not to easy) but when i apply, i get an error telling me that shapes self intersect. While i understand the reason of the message, i'm wondering if there is a trick to avoid auto booleans and keep all surfaces separated.

Sure i can create several layers but this would make difficult to adjust all the curves at once to get the desired result.

The only solution i found is to model the braid with smaller diameter curves so i can keep all of them separated, then expand the surface with the dedicated tool, but this way it's difficult to get an uniform result.

Any hints?

Thank you! Umberto

Oh! That's right... i still forget that voxels have different capabilities!

It's something like an hidden super power that i don't have mastered yet, LOL!

Thank you! Umberto
