I tried painting an object with the rusty metal, but when i do it applies a glossy black color to the model, not the rusty metal I have selected.  Someone I know did it succesfully in a video on youtube, but when I do it, boom, glossy black oily texture...

Anyone else run into this, is there a switch I need to flip, lighting to adjust?

Thanks again.!

Could you please do a screen recording, to show us what is actually going on in your scene. It's almost like an animation student in college asking the instructor for help in the lab, but to do so blindfolded. The instructor or lab assistant will almost always want to look at the screen to assess the problem.
