  1. Thanks for posting, but that news is several months old! :-)

I grabbed TS soon after the 'grab it now' frenzy and was impressed at some of the features it offered, but quite turned off on some 'usability' factors. (NOT meaning to spark a debate!)

I've set it aside for a rainy day, I'm quite fascinated by some of the "AI" type features to do with the scripting, flocking & others neat little things I saw were quite unique. It seems to have a very fast output & near real-time render ability, plus throw in some advanced 'logic' you could setup a fun little "let these guys animate themselves" style scene.

  2. just thought I'd resurrect this thread a bit...

With the new alpha versions of 3DC (alpha56 in this particular example) you

can have volumetric text on your models.

Taken a step further, you can use a font like 'Symbol' to add shapes where you

need/want them. In the image below, I've used Microsoft's built in CharMap program

to identify the character I wanted and pasted it into 3DC's text box to end up

    with the symbol I wanted.

Hey - just quick "thanks for tips" from me and I'm sure others. Any contributions to the tutorials more then welcomed.

  3. sure it does. When I import an .obj file into blender it has a clamp scale option which allows you to shrink the obj if it's too big by default

But another program I'm using does not have a Clamp scale upon import option so I was hoping that 3dcoat could put a little clamp scale option into the export instead if it's not too much trouble I mean

What I'm meaning is "no built-in concept of scale, or distance between units"

If .OBJ describe a vertex's XYZ as:

    v -0.858350 7.579272 -0.000000

    v -0.903371 7.579273 -0.123400

    v -1.026772 7.579285 -0.168406

    v -1.143381 7.579272 -0.116606

    v -1.194859 7.579274 -0.000000

It doesn't care about the measurement of space between these points - you get to make that up in your program of choice. It doesn't assign a cm,mm, inch, foot or yard or whatever to these numbers.

I think we're talking about different things - not trying to be argumentative

  4. Something that always struck me as odd in this forum... How come nobody uses avatars? There's like 5 of you that do. It's just not natural! :P

because they're all so intimidated by how handsome and charismatic ours are?! :)

  5. I can see this being useful for LED's, displays, etc. This option would be nice to have, especially if the channel is integrated into the DX and GL shaders.

I use Carrara or Vue for rendering. Carrara has a glow channel in shader room that lets you achieve this, and it then lets you also create an aura around any glowing objects. Quite useful at times, but I would usually simply use a mask of the diffuse or similar.

Han't thought about 'painting' glow before, could be good.

  6. texture completely painted in 3dc, the photoshop connection was used... (3.0 alpha-47 (cuda)(dx). texture size viewed here is 512x512. critique welcome.

    Thanks!!

Good looking critter, I think that looks like an efficient use of poly's.

Is that without a bump map applied? Sorry wasn't sure if so.

  7. YES!

    No flame war!

I have Poser 7 also. Was it put out so that the growing compatability of Poser stuff with DAZ/Studio and Carrara could no longer exist?

I still spit blood at paying for the Poser7 upgrade.

Hey, all the stuff I collected with Poser5 and 6, and more!, is in my Carrara Browser AUTOMATICALLY!----I never need to open Poser again!

    Brian

heh, we may have created internet history with the first ever poser-carrara-daz discussion that didn't end in tears ;)

I must admit on the Daz Carrara forums at least, the amount of times I wished there was a button that filtered out posts about Daz Content is pretty high. I do get a bit uppity about the impression/focus on Carrara as a content rendering engine...

I haven't upgraded to C7Pro, mainly as I feel my painting desires are being happily handled by 3DC.

  8. Poser and DAZ human forms.

    Look, -------

they are no way the ideal and come with a lot of baggage and incompatability problems--still!

We older Carrara users are not excited about the closer connection with those two apps/products.

There are better/more compatable human form making apps about (Quidam!)--and a lot of free stuff as well.

Poser is now offered at $30--the appropriate price/value for this app--- as a plugin ----to Carrara!

    Brian

NOT wanting to start a flame war but I think Poser ( I am talking v7 here) has more value than $30. It has a very useful walk-editor that IMO functions much better than 3dsmax's Biped tools, it has semi-useful talk designer for analysis and auto talk keyframe from speech wav's and I honestly have great respect for the OUTPUT of its renderer. Not the speed or convenience mind!

Carrara beats it for speed no questions. I believe Poser suffers from quite a large amount of vista & gfx card related crashes for a sizeable number of people.

    Just my opinion mind.

  9. Just a 'workflow' related tip that may help is, depending on your actual project goals you may be better off exporting the specific mesh area of interest only.

i.e. if working on a face only then exporting the head from Poser as a .obj would allow the benefit of increasing the heads mesh density on 3DC import, instead of having to fiddle with all that added complexity from an entire models mesh.

Also you may want to experiement with the free makehuman software which exports human .obj files with a simple 'one texture map' - it is also better than poser IMO in that you can export young/old fat/skinny etc styles meshes with just one or two clicks.

    For example:

    post-1094-1230774736_thumb.jpg

  10. Step 1:

Use voxel mode to create object.

    [sNIP]

    Step 5:

    Export model and smile..

So that's my ideal 3D Coat.

I think the success of 3D Coat is ultimately going to depend on the power of the "To Polygons" function to create an efficient mesh. Because as a creator of models for game engines I would much rather create a mesh with the correct topology from the start, rather than having to recreate a new mesh using retopology tools.

For what its worth I am in complete agreement with this post. Well put.

  11. 3D Coat has gotten some great comments, first of all it runs great compared to programs like MudBox 09 which most people are just turned off by it, secondly the interface is more user friendly compared to Zbrush.

The problem with 3D Coat is the following:

    - When are we gonna see the final for 3D Coat 3.0 with voxel painting ? Going into beta 334 won't help 3DC get the attention I believe it deserves due to how it runs and it's cost.

    - You can't paint bump maps in 3DC

    - You can't paint specular, diffuse, transparency, maps together and export each channel seperatly

    - Loading 3D meshs causes problems.

I don't quite follow you, 3DC exports color, specular, normalmap, displacement as separate maps when you use file->export model. (?)

You can't paint bump but you can use normal-map which is quicker and more powerful & effective anyway.

Loading meshes - bit of a general statement that, but I have had the odd issue that I've overcome almost always by choosing different options on the load-object screen, or creating a better UV map before importing.

My personal thoughts on what I'd like are more features for the low-poly crowd, architectural instead of organic features for example. I'm not as excited by volumetric sculpting myself but welcome the new feature as I understand once implemented Andrew does want to create some more low-poly tools for us.

Good things come to those who wait :)

  12. Vue should support .Obj and .LWO, thus it should work ok with objects made in 3DC.

Vue is semi-ok, BUT no support for normal-mapping

I've only had it a short time and haven't figured out if acceptable results can be obtained using Vues bump/displacement mapping.
