This thread has many well thought out and presented responses, but why (rhetorical question) am I left thinking we are not making progress?
What can we do to improve the thread before it transforms into some 20 page + monster. Is it time to vote on topic A, before moving on to Topic B? Any ideas people?
And just opinion, please think once or twice before labelling something silly. Constructive criticism is easier to digest. I almost gave up on the thread at the overuse of "this is SILLY" and other such stuff. Just my opinionated opinion.

If the room concepts can be changed as suggested I would be curious to know what other efficiency gains could be made. Imagining as Amber suggests that I make my own power-user "Sculpt" UI, is it really realistic at all that it could be possible to gain a few FPS or other brush-speed improvements?
The complexity of making a freely customisable interface (of course giving newbies some 'free' presets) sounds good - but at what cost in complexity and code?
We are seeing Blender 2.5 mentioned several times in this thread already - you do realise that the project is using the power of multiple developers. Things work slightly differently in a commercial development.
Choices have to be made, juggled and prioritised. What is best for us all? Unfortunately the answer often comes as hindsight.

Updated to 3.1.17
Changes:
- Reduction tool speed up essentially, it produces much better quality of output mesh.
- Curve manipulation bug mentioned by Jacobo fixed.
- All operations in retopo tool will not destroy existing UV set. It opens good workflow - make coarse mesh, uv it, then add detials to retopo mesh subrividing it or splitting individual edges or faces.
Sorry I don't understand the last change, could anyone who does understand explain it's use please.
"Make coarse mesh" is the main cause of confusion, I assume the change in a way means we can start with say a simple cube and almost in a way "polygon model" it into something much more complicated?

Some excellent commemts and thoughts from everyone here. I have nothing to add constructively other than my appreciation for others ideas.
I have to admit I have actually studied UI & Interface design as part of Uni studies 10 years ago. Our Uni borrowed an expert lecturer from Singapore whose real job was Military cockpit & systems interface designs. An absolutely fascinating and interesting man (and the concepts will always interest me)
I can say about 3D Coat with no doubt - that I am just too "close" to it to be able to think outside the box and objectively.
This may be hard to appreciate, but I only have the use of one-arm, I suffer chronic pain most of the time but I do hold down a full time job & relationship, and for me Sculpting, playing or just having fun in 3D is actually a way of therapy for me. As such it is actually quite difficult to think of ways of improving it. I can read others suggestions, and comment on them - but in a strange way have a small amount of guilt at not contributing more especially in these such discussions.

thanks for the tip. You know how Win7 installs Directx version 11, did you just do as usual & install Version 9 also?
-
Hey guys & gals. Last night I performed a Win7 Upgrade in place over the top of a healthy Vista 64.
Does anyone if this operation by default would have erased my dual direct 9 & 10 installs and replaced with just a v10 directx?
Im not sure how to check as running DXDIAG on any of my systems with 9&10 installed only reported on the v10. (It was obvious when 9 was uninstalled as 3DC and other software complained to me)
During last nights testing I noticed a huge hit in smoothing performance and most other voxel brush related activity.
The upgrade advisor warned me to uninstall the ATI drivers which I havent done yet as last time that caused BSOD madness on a brand new Dell. I guess the likely culprit is the ATI drivers (I have the 4850 card) but wanted to ask about the above also.

Oh grovvy!

Is there any decision on download versions of the webinars?
Cheers,

Thanks. I look forward to learning new methods of shader-use. Just thought it would be useful to myself & others to hear a bit more about your ideas.
Nice one
-
Alpha? Forgive you if you have never switched to Render room yet.
hehe, whoops. I only render turntables so never paid enough attention
-
Can you give an example of the 'utility' of this shader?
Cheers,
Robbie

Good idea Amber. Also option to render with transparancy & alpha could be good. (or does that exist already )

I was on holiday and just back to see the update with the new mesh decimation, I think I was almost as excited at that as I was at spending two days at the beach!
But Sssssh don't tell my girlfriend

Today I've tried to drum-up support from other Carrara users to convince Daz to fix the incomplete/broken .fbx exporter, so that the relationship I hope to have with Unity will blossom
Daz have stated a renewed interest in the Game Dev market so I actually have every hope that within a short-time I'll add Unity to my 3DC/Carrara->game workflow
Just hobbyist at this stage, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Nice result from a healthy discussion
Well done - should improve lotsa import related tasks
-
Sounds interesting Phil, is it just from a "new user" type of perspective?
-
Cheers! sadly not 3d related though, just boring mailhouse datafiles manipulation. Still good news as once the newbies trained up I get to offload tasks on them. *cackles*
-
Thanks very much, should make my job of training some interstate newbies a bit easier. I always disliked non face-to-face traning as you never know what area of the screen they are looking at!

Hey Coaters. I'm needing to do a tutorial and was wanting to know if anyone can tell which is the screencam software that does the automatic type of 'zoom to mouse' type of feature? Also would anyone know if that zoom requires a hotkey?
As usual thanks in advance.

The import wizard information online stated it could read Carrara mesh, bones and animation via .FBX export from Carrara but this didn't turn out to be true. Pity really as had uses for it if it could read Carrara's export as I currently don't have any other software capable of exporting animated Mesh to Unity.

Could you maybe try to decimate (make low-poly version) another version of your reference mesh in your poly modeller and import this without subdividing or scaling up on the voxel import process?
-
Maybe we can use this tool to create Phil's earlier idea with the virtual-gallery?
-
Nice one!

I like it. I do have Vue which for a landscape focused suite, has pretty awful terrain tools.
How quick did you find the workflow went with this?
