That's pretty strange. I'm running a geforce GTX 760 w/ 4GB of VRAM and 16GB of RAM, I would imagine you would be in a better situation than I am. I recently textured something with a bunch of 4K textures, and it did pretty well. It slowed down now and was slow to load the file, but once it did that, it worked alright. How large is your 3B file? Is it something you can shared, maybe I can try to load it into 3DC.
Also, which version of 3DC are you using?

The best way for bugs is definitely Mantis, unless it's urgent, in which case email support is best (support AT 3dcoat DOT com). For FRs, Trello is good, but so is Mantis. I would lean more toward Mantis, personally. It's a lot easier to track and date things on there.

Andrew, is there any movement on a fix for SVG file import for the curve modes? It's still very, very broken (they don't import at all). In fact, none of the curve import supported files import. Which leads me to think that the whole importing process is broken and not just for one file type. Please can you take a look at this? It's been this way for many months.

I would email support directly ( support AT 3d-coat DOT com ). Andrew may be able to help you. In the mean time, I would definitely use OBJ. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Which version of FBX are you exporting? It might be worth trying the latest version (4.7.17X). Link is here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByesnXO2ExYDRGRxMUljSHk2dWs/view?usp=sharing
If you're pressed for time, using an OBJ file should work.

Are you importing to paint, sculpt, etc.?

It does seem like it would be a padding issue. Maybe try turning down the pixel padding in Edit>Preferences>General>Padding Width, and then erasing that area, and trying to paint again?

It depends on what you're referring to. In the manual and in the interface (as much as possible), I've tried to not use the word layer or group too much for various and different things.
In the manual and most of the UI, a Layer refers only to the layers in the Paint Layers panel (ala PS). Otherwise in the VoxTree, that is known as a Sculpt Object. So for the two more important aspects of the program, it is "nailed" down, so to speak. For tutorials that I don't mind, I cannot control that aspect.

You can install any asset from File>Install extension. Once installed you'll need to reboot 3DC. Each asset will show in their respective panels after that.

It looks like the smart material is overriding the fill with freeze function. That seems to be a bug. That said, I'm using a newer version than what you are and am not experiencing that. Try downloading the latest version (4.7.16 for Windoze, 4.7.13 for Mac, as of this writing) and try again, hopefully the latest for MacOS will not have that bug. I usually end up using the flatten tool with the plane option. It works almost exactly like what you're looking for.
