    3DCoat 4.9 testing thread

    1. I did a clean install of 3D-Coat 4.9.08 to see if I had a corrupt file somewhere. I tried again and had the same problem. The first time I updated a preset is fine, but any additional updates won't be retained.

4.9.08 1. The Update Preset command doesn't seem to work with the depth and radius brush curves in the Sculpting Room. 2. 3DC doesn't remember my Preset window settings from the previous session. Even if I "Clear All" my presets, then load in a new set, then shut down. The next time I open up 3DC, I have an old set of presets in the Preset window and not the ones that were there when I shut down, previously. The only way to fix this is to manually delete the presets in my Documents/3D-CoatV49/Presets folder before I open 3DC.

I just noticed, while setting up custom depth and radius curves in the Sculpting Room, that simply opening and canceling out of the Preferences window will set my curves back to default. Version 4.9.07

3D-Coat 4.9.07 Vox Clay Brush: Use Spacing seems to work inversely. Lower values cause wider spacing. Voxel Extrude Brush: Use Spacing causes mesh holes and corruption.

Some of these suggestions sound really good, and I'm not a developer, but is it possible that performance could be negatively affected by these changes? Also, how difficult would it be and how long would it take to implement these new features? One thing Andrew needs to think about is, if Blender continues to improve it's sculpting and painting abilities, how he can differentiate 3D-Coat from Blender. Maybe by better performance, or cleaner, easier to use UI?

Problèm . The PAN is not like before

Isn't this customizable in the settings? I never use the default settings. I also have an older Wacom, so that might be why I don't have this problem.

This is a minor problem and I think I saw it mentioned before, but not sure if it was addressed or not. The voxel Build brush doesn't behave correctly as it draws out over a curved surface, unless Steady Stroke is enabled. The image is pretty self explanatory. Again, since it works as it should with Steady Stroke, it's not a big deal, but I thought I should point it out.
  8. I would go for the latest Ryzen 3000 chips. I went from a Mac Pro 2008 to self built Ryzen 1700x to the latest AMD chips. Just make sure you have really good cooling. These are really hot cpu's.
  9. How does sculpting in Blender compare to 3DCoat? The sculpting developer is working on some interesting things for Blender 2.80. https://twitter.com/pablodp606

Sorry if I touched a nerve and I stand corrected if my impressions of the other programs were wrong. I don't use MB, so I only know of it from what I have read in the past. I'm mainly coming from the viewpoint of 3D sculpting and, for me, 3DC is great for what I do. My general point was that as a single developer, there is only so much Andrew can do. 3DC has a lot of advanced features, but for me, all those tools and functions need to work and be stable. The Voxel room has improved greatly since I first started using 3DC, so I'm optimistic that the other areas can see those same improvements.

I think we all agree that the most critical bugs need to be fixed first, before adding in new features. That mesh explosion/corruption bug in the Voxel room is one that stands out for me. I can't speak to what needs work in the other rooms since I mainly sculpt in 3DC. Given the choice, I would rather have a few tools that are really stable and work smoothly, than a lot of cool features that are buggy and unreliable. At it's current price point, 3DC must focus on doing a few things really well. It can't compete, feature for feature with Mari, ZB or MB. I think Andrew needs to decide if he wants to expand 3DC's capabilities. If he does, then he needs to take on more help, raise the price and hope his current user base supports him. I think it's too much for one person to continue to develop an ever expanding program without help. I see 3DC as a sculpting and painting tool for freelance artists and advanced hobbyists (hence the low price). If you need more than the basic tool set of 3DC, then upgrade to ZB, MB or Mari.

I think that, in general, because 3DC is a 2D/3D paint program, PS is a good model to follow as far as function and UI is concerned. PS is a standard (whether we like it or not) and almost everyone knows how to use it. It is time and user tested. No need to reinvent the wheel. If 3DC can have the same consistency and familiarity as PS, this can be a big selling point for 3DC. ZB and Blender have unique UI's and workflows, and I know that some are uncomfortable using these apps. 3DC can really shine in this one area. I know this isn't easy, but I think this is a good direction to follow.

Maybe there is a problem with the resampling function. If I open your mesh and resample at default settings before I Smooth All, the mesh is fine. I'm still using the last Mac release 4.0.11. Btw, is there any reason why 3DC doesn't automatically reorder your mesh with even tris (like Tangent smoothing) whenever you resample? It's always a 2 step process for me whenever I need to resample a mesh. First I Resample, then I Smooth All to get a cleaner mesh.
