Member RobH2 Posted February 21, 2015 Member Report Share Posted February 21, 2015 (edited) I'm unable to get Autopo to work, well, complete that is. I can get through to drawing splines for edge flow. Once I click 'Next' 3DC stops responding. I only have my mesh set to 1000 and have about 8 splines, none overlapping. The progress at the top just stays at '0%.' I've let it run as long as one hour and sill nothing so I just end task out of it. I've tried it 3 times and still the same result. This could be an issue or it could be just me. Not sure. Just reporting it. Edited February 21, 2015 by RobH2

Place all guides on the same symmetry side, the green ones..... Possible reason of 3DC locking up. if it is still locking up try all guides on one side. Be sure to understand what number 7 is saying as well... Auto-Retopo is going to get a major reworking after 4.5 is released from a statement given by Javis here in this thread. Member RobH2 Posted February 24, 2015 Author Member Report Share Posted February 24, 2015 Read the Auto-Retopology guide if you have not done so. The link is at the top of the tool panel. Thanks for the info. I'm unable to locate the guide but will experiment more. One issue is that my part is not symmetrical. It's a CT scan of a human cervical vertebrae and it's not mirrored across an axis. Both halves are slightly different. Is there some tolerance such that it won't matter to the splines if both sides are slightly different? I hovered and clicked and looked all over the interface and could find no guide. The manual doesn't have a numbered list about retopo either. I'll keep looking and testing.

If it close to being symmetrical you can try with symmetry... If that is an surface mode model and esp a scan model you can have interior problems that you do not see, switch to voxel mode and fill voids, under the vox tree tab. Surface mode since it is polygon based is prone to having problems with auto retopo. Not the fault of 3DC but of the state of meshes. You made keep the surface mode object, just clone it and turn the clone into the voxel model for auto retopo. retopo guide at the top of the panel.. Here is the link too... http://pilgway.com/files/guidesexample.png Edited February 24, 2015 by digman
Member RobH2 Posted February 24, 2015 Author Member Report Share Posted February 24, 2015 I'm always careful to check my meshes in Max and make sure they are manifold and error free before I send them to 3DC. I know for certain that the .obj's that I export from Max are perfect and have zero errors. Ok, yes, I have seen that guide before and yes, #7 is what I need to pay more attention to. This guide assumes that all of our models are bilateral. Frequently organic objects have no symmetry. So it's odd that 3DC has trouble with or can hang up when the object is in fact close to or exactly symmetrical. That's what appears to be going on anyway. If I don't enable symmetry and just spline out my vertebrae, how's 3DC to know if it's symmetrical or not and as long as I follow the other rules, it should execute the mesh creation, right? Reputable Contributor digman Posted February 24, 2015 Reputable Contributor Report Share Posted February 24, 2015 Yeah, the current auto retopo has it's problems and I am glad Andrew has decided to work it over after 4.5 is released. The only thing I can think of his turning it into a voxel model and fill voids to see if it will not hang. Try just green guides. I had meshes hang too and you go grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... I am running out of suggestions... LOL. Auto Retopo needs the reworking to fix the issues that have been brought a number times... Andrew I am sure will make the routine better and more stable when he returns to it.

This Auto-retopo-feature was one main reason for me, to buy this software (among beeing cheaper but about as capable, than Zbrush4) Really hope, this will be improved/fixed soon! For my PBR needs, I already got Substance Designer & Painter, i use 3DC´s painting for handpainted style texturing, only - so 4.5´s PBR feature-set is not that important (for me) - but that´s only me Cheers!
