Why isn't selection set to auto by default?

If you click the CLEAR SELECTION button in the Toolbar (above the UI), after you are done working with a given selection, it will switch back to Auto select mode. You can also assign a hotkey to Auto (by hovering over the option with your cursor > hit the END key on your keyboard and assign whichever key you like). I think Andrew doesn't make it default back to auto after you hit the ESC key because some users will complain that they don't want to be in auto mode and want to stay in the element mode they already have chosen.

So, the CLEAR SELECTION button or a hotkey assignment seems like a happy compromise. Maybe it can be improved, but most people probably just set the same hotkeys for the individual elements they are used to in their main 3D app.
