Member Jibrish Posted March 5, 2009 Member Report Share Posted March 5, 2009 Hello, I'm new. Great program. Brilliant even. Also like the Photoshop like layers and PSD compatibility. Two things I'm having a little trouble with though: (1) The colors don't seem consistent (display wise) from 3DC to photoshop and I haven't found a way to "color manage" them. (2) With Specularity things seem glossier when I export to other programs than they did in 3DC and it's hard to get a dull finish. Am I missing something? Andrew Shpagin
(1) The colors don't seem consistent (display wise) from 3DC to photoshop and I haven't found a way to "color manage" them. Specular can't be export to PSD, only color... maybe I will do it in future versions. (2) With Specularity things seem glossier when I export to other programs than they did in 3DC and it's hard to get a dull finish. There are several params for specularity in other programs - specularity and specular power. You can try (if it is there) to set specular texture as specular power in your program. In Blender, I map the specular texture as a multiplier to both the specular value and the specular exponent / hardness. It approximates closely. In maya you can create a similiar setup. What program are you using?
Member Jibrish Posted March 6, 2009 Author Member Report Share Posted March 6, 2009 What program are you using? I use Blender and truespace7 for rigging and such though I'm not well practiced at either one. My primary tools are Silo 2 (for low poly), Photoshop CS3, and Corel Painter X. My main interest in 3DC is Silo to 3DC to Photoshop for photo-ready illustrations. So color precision and sheen (diffuse and specular reflection) are important. Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure I would recommend that. At least the version I have (cs3) has a pretty rudimentary renderer. It doesn't support normal or displacement maps either. If you already use blender, I've written a 3dc>blender tutorial that approximates all the settings: http://www.3d-coat.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2180 Blender's renderer is quite capable and the learning curve isn't that steep. Your renders can even be imported in to CS3 as 32 bit exrs if you want.

I'll check that out. Andrew, Is there a way to "color manage" in order to get color consistency with other programs like "Adobe 1998" or "North America Web" settings? Member Jibrish Posted March 20, 2009 Author Member Report Share Posted March 20, 2009 I'm hoping that while 3DC seems to be pursuing the holy grail of modeling that it won't forget the under served area of color and painting in the 3d realm. 2d programs are still far ahead of 3d in the implementation of tools and consistency over various platforms when it comes to drawing and painting. Thanks so much for all of your effort in this area, Andrew. It's a great start.
