Advanced Member pbowmar Posted October 29, 2009 Advanced Member Report Share Posted October 29, 2009 Hi, I have a Voxel sculpt, just a test, that I've made 2X resolution. When I try to Quadrangulate or export as OBJ, I get an Out of Memory error. What puzzles me is, I'm on 64bit Linux running the 64bit build, but it doesn't try to go into Swap, I have 3.3GB RAM and 3GB Swap but the Swap isn't touched. I'm no systems guru but other apps will try to use all available memory including Swap before they bail out. Curious if this is coded in or I'm just not understanding the memory management issues Sorry if this is the wrong forum... Cheers, Peter B

Something else you could try is, if you have Vista or Windows 7, you have a feature called "Ready Boost"...so that you can take a cheap 4-8GB thumb/flash drive, plug it into a USB port and one of the options in the AutoPlay dialogue box is to allow it to be used for ReadyBoost. Flash memory is usually faster than reading and writing to a HD. It's not a replacement for having plenty of RAM in your system, but it can make a noticeable difference in some situations (like loading programs faster). The OS knows when it's faster to read/write to a HD and when it's faster writing to flash memory via ReadyBoost...usually random calls will get used by Ready Boost. It helps give your system a bit more of a lift under heavy loads like this...give it a try.
Advanced Member pbowmar Posted October 29, 2009 Author Advanced Member Report Share Posted October 29, 2009 Hi, Thanks for the tip, I'll try that on my Vista laptop sometime. On my main Linux machine, that's effectively what Swap should do for me, but it appears that 3DC is ready "real" RAM only when deciding when memory is full Cheers, Peter B
