  1. Sorry, thought I was clear.....I only want to create (or import) a basic mesh & detail it with greebles in 3DC. I want to see which app is best for this. I've done it in C4D, ZBrush, & Blender, and want to see how 3DC does it. Thanks for the mini-tutorial. I'll try it asap.
  2. Hi, I've been searching for a tutorial on creating displacement in 3DC. I want to displace the mesh to add "greebles" using a texture and displacement map, then export the obj to e.g. VUE. I'm not trying to create maps, just geometry. Also interested in Vector Displacement, but looks like it's not a feature in 3DC yet. Would appreciate any help or info. Thanks!
  3. I'm interested in Vector Displacement. I searched the 3DC online manual, but don't see any info on it. Will it be added in 3DC 5? I see Andrew was working on it in 2008. http://3d-brush-dev.blogspot.com/2008/05/vector-displacement.html
  4. Constructive criticism is welcome, but a "tude" isn't.
  5. Will we be able to edit the shader or do we just change the cube map? I didn't know about Marmoset......will try it out.
  6. I don't understand how you can get PBR without a PBR renderer (yet), but it sounds great, and I'm looking forward to using it.
  7. Hi, the newsletter says Physically Based Rendering is coming soon to 3D CoatI've always associated PBR with certain renderers, e.g. Lux, Octane, Mistuba, etc. But this thread sounds like PBR in 3DC is going to be accomplished by special PBR materials using the current renderer?
  8. Now I'm really having fun! This is very intuitive to use.......much easier than the ZBrush's. Thank you!
  9. Hi, does anyone know what is the status of radial/axial symmetry for 3DC? I see this video that is 3yrs old, and this feature request, but no answer as to when it will be added to 3DC.
  10. Hi, when using the Cutoff tool, the exit hole is larger than the initial hole. Is there a way to control the entry/exit hole size? I thought they would at least be the same size. A few minutes later..... I think it's because I wasn't in orthographics view. Seems to work as expected now.
  11. Ok, thanks. BTW, text.xml & english.xml are exactly the same....just different names in different folders. Just curious, why?
  12. Dang! And I was just getting used to "Merge". So we can call it anything we want, right?Just edit the xml. (find & replace) I didn't find an english.xml, but did find a "text.xml" that has several refs to merge.
  13. Hi, I've been experimenting with the CutfOff tool.....it makes nice clean cuts. Is there a tool to make clean holes......oriented to the normals or at an angle to a surface? .... Whoa! Just realized I only have to change the shape to a circle (or whatever) to make a laser clean hole! Very cool.
  14. Today I took the 4.0 User Manual pdf (on a flash drive) to the local printer. They printed & spiral bound it for $13 (US). If I had printed it myselft, they would charge only $5 for the binding which allows the book to lay completely flat. I've done this several times now with books, e.g. Mastering Blender. It makes any book much more useable & portable, and the learning more efficient & enjoyable. I'm hoping there will be a "Mastering 3DCoat" some day.....already spiral bound! I cringed the first time when they cut off the spine of the book to punch it and add the spiral, but it was really painless. Great to have when waiting at the checkout or waiting for my wife at the stylist's.
  15. Muchas gracias mi amigo! I wish I had started learning 3DC years ago. I'll try to get up to speed asap.
  16. Ok, so that's extra stuff. I just wasn't sure if the toolset in the Educational version was the same as the Pro's, or if I just didn't know where to look in the GUI. Thanks.
  17. Hi, I'm just getting started with 3DC, and like it very much. Feel like a kid in a toy store. I see some tutorials where there are a bunch of presets in a section on the bottom. e.g. those by Lester Banks. Are those assets that have been accumulated & added to a customized GUI? Are they available only with the Pro version or registered Educational version?
  18. Ok, I put in a plug. Let's see where it goes.
  19. Ok, thanks. I just realized there's a Part II thread here as well, so will go through it all till I get the hang of it. Have you ever taken a poll to see how many would be willing to pay for a set, and how much? You're a natural for video tutorials. You remind me of Neal Hirsig....he has a great set for Blender.
  20. Hi Greg, thanks for these excellent tutorials. They seem deceptively simple, but cover quite a bit, and are very helpful. You have the best voice of any I've heard, and very calm & well prepared. Appreciate your efficient delivery. Rats aren't my favorite subject, but I'm pretty sure I can model an alien spaceship with just these 7 tuts. Any chance you will do one on displacement mapping, e.g. the Engineer's ship in Prometheus? So far, 3DCoat is much more intuitive to use than ZBrush (an amazing app, but frustrating for me). I'll keep going through these 7 tutorials & all the tips till I get a handle on 3DC, but hope you'll do some more.
  21. Thanks......I saw the link, but didn't see the credits. Meinbender said in the comments:
  22. Sept 8, 2013, Carlosan asked: "What is better in Carrara that surpassed Blender?" Carrara has much easier animation controls....e.g. spin modifier, point-at mod, copy/pasting keyframes, editing curves (ease in/out). Blender is still much more powerful (vis Sintel video), but Carrara is much easier for routine animating without using nodes. Carrara used to be my "main app", and I still like it very much for certain things, but I use Blender 90% of the time now....mostly for fluid & soft body sims, or abstract animations....it's a great app, and the development cycle is amazing. When I first tried it using 2.49, it drove me crazy, and I swore, "May a spider lay her eggs in my ear before I ever try Blender again!" But in 2009, when they created the new GUI, and I saw the Sintel video, I decided to give it one last try, and am glad I did! =O The GUI is still not as intuitive as Carrara or C4D, but I find I can get around and find my way as there are so many great tutorials, and a helpful community. It's worth learning......and you can't complain about the price.....FREE. I'm interested in 3DC to help me create space ships like the one in Prometheus. It's funny, because I was able to do something in Blender using a map I got from michalis at an epic Blender thread he started about Sculpting with UVs & Displacements. Using this excellent tutorial by Oliver Villar, I was able to use Blender to model this ship (rendered in VUE). But the process was difficult, and I don't know how I did it. LOL! I hope 3DCoat may allow me to create more organic base meshes for the ship, and also to add details with displacement. I was also trying ZBrush, but am taking a break to see what I can do in 3DC. And also will try it in C4D (displacement) Whichever app gives the best result with the least hassle. They are all great apps, and do something best.
  23. Hi, re: the Pirate video.....very well done. But how was 3DC used to create it? I don't see any timeline or animation tools except turntable or fly thru (?)
  24. Hi everyone, I've been trying to learn ZBrush, especially displacement mapping to create space ships with detailed geometry, e.g. the Engineer's ship in Prometheus, but am very frustrated by the ZBrush gui after 2 months. I've done something similar in Blender (rendered in VUE), and would like to try in 3DC. My first impressions of 3DC are very good.....the gui seems much more intuitive than ZB's. I like the "feel" and look of it. I've downloaded several tutorials, and will try to get a basic understanding asap, hopefully in 1 month or less. Cheers, Cal
