Advanced Member alvordr Posted December 24, 2012 Advanced Member Share Posted December 24, 2012 Hi. I'm not sure if this already exists, but I was making a chair with a seat cushion and pillows in 3D Coat and realized afterwards that I didn't create the cushion separate from the chair, as I did the pillows. I can go into another app and do this, but if there isn't already a way to do this in 3D Coat, can this functionality be considered, please? Advanced Member alvordr Posted December 24, 2012 Author Advanced Member Share Posted December 24, 2012 I just realized there is a Split With... option in the voxel room, but it appears to only work when the volumns are on a separate layer. Not sure if I'm going down the right road here.
Contributor TimmyZDesign Posted December 25, 2012 Contributor Share Posted December 25, 2012 Select the Split tool. Then choose a selection method from the "E" panel: Draw a circle around the area you want to split off from the rest. Hit enter. That piece will be split off and put into a new voxel layer in the Voxtree.
Advanced Member alvordr Posted December 27, 2012 Author Advanced Member Share Posted December 27, 2012 The only problem with that particular technique is that you may not be able to select around that object, say a bolt inside of an electrical box. ZBrush handles this by using Subtools and/or Polygroups.
Contributor TimmyZDesign Posted December 28, 2012 Contributor Share Posted December 28, 2012 Some other cool tools to try out are the Copy tool, Hide tool, and the Voxlayer tool. They can all be used to split off difficult-to-reach parts of your mesh. On the other hand, the Polygroup selection tools of Zbrush are amazing, and if something like those were added to 3D-Coat, it would be wonderful! Advanced Member alvordr Posted December 28, 2012 Author Advanced Member Share Posted December 28, 2012 Yeah, I'll have to take a look at those. Thanks. 3D Coat is both intuitive and unintuitive. There are some things that save lots of time and others that seem unnecessarily labor intensive or obscure. I'm sure it's just growing pains.
