How to change the plane at which your object is facing

My object when imported is laying along the X axis so turning it makes it really awkward. I want it to be set upright, like should be along the Y axis. Please help  

This is how I need the object to be imported. Facing me. (CORRECT WAY)

(INCORRECT WAY) However, below is how it is imported in and I don't want it this way... I want it imported facing as is above.
