[Solved] what happened to my smart material preview window?

it dissapeared and I can't find the option to turn it back on again?  It must be in the menu somewhere.

oh nevermind - found it under 'show material preview' in preferences

i wonder if that should be under windows or view menu instead or hide?
i read the blurb on where it gets saved to but forgot it then tried combing the menus and couldnt find it.
i was not expecting to find that in preferences. this post saved my sanity
