  1. totally agree with you there. When I said interface discussion is not useless, I meant the the way the interface works...the way it looks is a secondary concern and Im not really interested in discussing that. Mudbox and zbrush do very similar things and have very similar tools but present them in very different ways, 3D coat at the moment has the potential to go in either direction. I think its important for the 3D coat users to emphasise how they would expect the application to be laid out to facilitate their workflow but ultimately its up to the developers to make the decisions. We can give our viewpoint and back it up with our reasons based on the way we work but theres no point getting into heated arguements over those things which we dont have the right to decide.
  2. directx10 is not required for voxels and I dont know if theres any advantage, maybe just give the alpha a try and see whether you think you will need a new gfx card? I think 9800GT is fairly well priced and as for the fan well I think it depends which brand of 9800GT you buy
  3. I dont think interface discussion is useless, I think we have all seen how important an interface is. Especially in the battle between mudbox and zbrush. Probably one of the only reasons mudbox is successful is that it has an intuitive interface that copys many of its features from existing software designs so that new users arent bombarded by strange new ideas and can get on with work. Sure some people dont like mudbox's interface but I would say there are a lot more people that are really annoyed by zbrushes interface and the amount of learning required to use it.
  4. great work, my only crit is that I would like to see more of the bear, maybe frame the composition a bit nicer textures and fur look great! the image is a little bit dark and desaturated I like the preview in the blender screenshot
  5. nice but now the background wood is lighter too...I think what we meant was that having a contrast between the paper and the wood background is good so a light paper on a dark wood is good but now you made the wood lighter so its a light paper on a light wood which is nice but not so good in my opinion
  6. I agree the lighter paper looked nicer and created focus
  7. looks excellent, what does the quadrangulated mesh look like without the displacement? how did you render out the displacement map?
  8. nice work, the background texture is a bit big and blurry it might be nice to have something more high detail like your objects
  9. I have an old amd 3500+ 2GB ram 512 MB geforce 8800GT and 3D coat voxel sculpting gets about 3 million triangles before it gets too slow to be useful heres a screenshot.
  10. this really looks like something that would be almost impossible to achieve without the incredible tools 3d coat offers , nice work!
  11. Hi Cookepuss you probably know me from Gameartisans, Ive been experimenting with the 3D coat 3 alpha for a little while now and Im definitely thinking of purchasing it now. Your question is difficult to answer because you ask - how can 3d coat fit into my current workflow? youve already got 1. quality modelling tools in cinema4d 2. excellent sculpting in zbrush 3. versatile painting engine in Bodypaint so if you dont want to use 3dcoat for rough modelling, sculpting or painting then youve already removed the prospect of using 3 good features of the software. The only 2 things I can think of that 3d coat offers which wouldnt require a workflow change are 1. voxel sculpting - you can rough out ideas, create basemeshes with quadrangulate, or even final sculpts 2. retopo which is self explanatory and very useful. If you really wanted to get all the benefits 3D coat offers you would probably have to make some changes to your workflow. what I did for my pooh bear entry to the gameartisans kingdom hearts contest is 1. voxel sculpt pooh bear in 3dcoat 2. hard surface model the armour in c4d 3. import hard surface into 3dcoat 4. retopo the whole model and export low poly and high poly from 3dcoat 5. bake in xnormal 6. paint textures in photoshop and bodypaint Honestly I still havent tried 3Dcoats texture painting tools as Im really still a noob to this program and I really havent explored many of the other features as Im just so interested in the voxel sculpting
  12. yeah cgtextures is good but the images arent tiled but thats not hard to do. thanks for the info haikalle
  13. thanks guys, hmm I dont usually make tutorials but that would be cool. started on ryu in 3D coat, I plan on doing his whole upper body in the hadouken pose didnt have the time for this and this sketch is baad haha
  14. thanks yeah 3d coat is cool, I did all the lowpoly model in 3D coat too so all I used other apps for is the hard surface objects like those gloves and bullet proof vest and the texture baking in xnormal
  15. cool voxel sculpt are you going to bake a normal map onto the retopod mesh? I also found that its wise to keep seperate object layers, for my winnie the pooh I had eyes on one layer and shirt on another and arm and leg on their own layers too
  16. I agree with Roger k, I have no idea why anyone would use this 3Dpaintbrush tool when similar options for real time material rendering are available in nearly all 3D software? also why is it called 3dpaintbrush if it doesnt let you paint objects as if you have a 3D paintbrush?...its more like 3Dbucketfill than 3Dpaintbrush. also I wouldnt say its any use for low poly models as all the models shown in the gallery on that site are what I would consider high poly models these are low poly models: http://www.gameartisans.org/gamecon/galler...339&aw=2105 http://www.gameartisans.org/gamecon/galler...491&aw=2342 can they be painted this well in this 3dpaintbrush software?...nope 3D coat already has shaders and a true 3D paint brush tool and direct painting is still coming so we really could paint stuff to the quality of those low poly models in 3D coat.
  17. interesting news, is there going to be more screenshots of an interface overhaul? has lightwave ever had icons for its tools? I just find I rely on symbols and colours to remember where stuff is and lightwave was a nightmare to learn at university because everything is just a little gray block with writing on. I now use cinema 4D and max and find both of them have a better user interface than lightwave but arent necessarily a better tool.
  18. yeah I dont see how they can charge $200 for indie which is pretty good just doesnt have fancy bells and whistles, and then almost $2000 for the same thing with a couple of extra shiny graphical features. I should imagine $400 for pro would be more realistic, I think most people who arent a big studio would be fine with indie and using baked lighting and textures to get professional looking results.
  19. yeah thats all thats really needed as long as you can set that layer to show with full brightness even in shadow? just to get a good idea of what your working with
  20. final submission to the GameArtisans.org Kingdom Hearts challenge its snowing here now, its beautiful!
  21. I retopod my pooh sculpt today in 3D coat only took a few hours but hes still quite lowpoly when the limit is 3000 tris
