Painting an alpha?

Is there any way to have a single layer/channel that affects all the layers opacity, like an alpha channel? The only way I know to do this atm is to erase those parts in layer0 and all other visible layers.

Create a Layer Mask, and all the layers you want to have that mask applied to, you just select those layers, and in the Blending modes panel, at the bottom, you point/link it to that mask layer.
