Member Ridnic Posted October 28, 2016 Member Report Share Posted October 28, 2016 Hi Guys, I'm having an issue with the generated curvature Map thats needed for materials to work properly. As you can see in the picture some edges do not receive any curvature values and the applied Material then fails to apply edge wear. I tried obj and fbx Import from Cinema 4D with Auto Smoothing Groups on the import options checked. Any ideas?
Carlosan
Hello Ridnic. Which version are you using ? Can you share the model please to take a look ? ty !
Member Ridnic Posted October 28, 2016 Author Member Report Share Posted October 28, 2016 Hey Carlosan :-) I am using the 4.7.06 version. Stromkasten04.fbx Stromkasten03.obj
Carlosan
Stromkasten03.obj not have UV maps. Stromkasten04.fbx has this uv map. In order for the texture to appear properly it must be uv mapped with all mapping parameters at their defaults. 3DCoat have the ability to generate a UV map based on your imported model file (UV map typing = Auto-mapping). Member Ridnic Posted October 30, 2016 Author Member Report Share Posted October 30, 2016 Sorry, i forgot to say that I created the UVs after import inside of 3DCoat! But it seems im doing sth wrong there, because your curvature looks flawless. I will upload my unwrapped 3dcoat model tomorrow.
Member Ridnic Posted October 31, 2016 Author Member Report Share Posted October 31, 2016 So I just did a "Auto Seams" and hit "Unwrap" In Paint Mode I applied a material and the flawed Curvature Map was generated. Where is my mistake? :S I am sooo looking forward to have a Curvature Map like yours flawed_curvature_01.3b
Carlosan
please try this, the only difference i can found is the version. im using 4.7.11 curvature.zip
Carlosan
sidenote: Hard edges are not the same. That change how curvature looks. My model Your model:
Carlosan
From the last test, your model -flawed_curvature_01.3b- dont have material assigned, i exported it and added one material phong in external app. Then after import and perform the same operation got this result. Usually i do this first steps at high res -4K- and downsize the maps later, the result is better. Are you using any external render engine with custom shaders applied ? Member Ridnic Posted October 31, 2016 Author Member Report Share Posted October 31, 2016 I think the reason our Models look different is the import angle for smoothing groups. Cinema4D uses a phong Tag and the only way to detect edges on Import is the "Auto Smoothing Groups" option. Your Map looked more detailed, so I decided to create a much larger Texture Map. At 8k my result was the same as yours. Do you downsize the textures in 3D Coat? Working with smaller maps is much faster. Too bad the generated maps are not as clean :S
Member Ridnic Posted October 31, 2016 Author Member Report Share Posted October 31, 2016 Ok, my map just looked good on first sight. I still got problems there. Guess I have to try the Beta Version.
Member Ridnic Posted October 31, 2016 Author Member Report Share Posted October 31, 2016 So i tried the same with the Beta Version for Mac (4.7.11) and I still have this Problem 4k Map resolution.
Carlosan
what result do you get using my version ?
Member Ridnic Posted October 31, 2016 Author Member Report Share Posted October 31, 2016 And after a closer look I think your map was flawed on some edges as well:
Carlosan
may be the angle of vision ? flawed_curvature_02.zip
Member Ridnic Posted October 31, 2016 Author Member Report Share Posted October 31, 2016 Ok, then I have no clue why it is working for you and not for me :S
Member Ridnic Posted October 31, 2016 Author Member Report Share Posted October 31, 2016 With your Model in 3DCoat I get a clean Curvature Map. Did you import my fbx File?
Javis
I have been having the same problem for a long time now, my temporary solution has been to bake a curvature map in xNormal or dDo, which I'd really just rather do in 3DC. I have a little time right to get this resolved, so I emailed Andrew about the issue, I'm hoping he fixes this issue. It's a real problem. I'll also forward him this thread.

Member Ridnic Posted November 1, 2016 Author Member Report Share Posted November 1, 2016 It was indeed the UV map :S It works with Auto Map. I still dont know was really causes that problem but at least I can start texturing again. Thanks Javis! Thanks a lot Carlosan ;-)
