Member rs3d Posted October 15, 2009 Member Report Share Posted October 15, 2009 When importing FBX or OBJ for Voxel Mode the Smoothing Groups get ignored. Is there a option to evaluate them and not creating an edgy, non-smoothed voxel object? Importing my FBX/OBJ files into other 3D software or viewers shows that they are smooth, just 3DC ignores this data. Thanks a lot, Rob

Importing my FBX/OBJ files into other 3D software or viewers shows that they are smooth, just 3DC ignores this data. Thanks a lot, Rob In the other viewers, they aren't smooth, they are rendered as IF they are smooth. If you look at the silhouette it's probably still faceted. Since the smoothing groups on OBJs / FBX doesn't actually affect the geometry, only the appearance of the shading on that geometry it won't affect the voxels. The Voxels are simply inside, or not inside the geometry. If you're hoping for a smoother representation of your mesh, you could use "subdivide" in the merge palette. But, smoothing groups - won't have affect in voxel-town. Someone correct me if I'm wrong (pretty sure I'm not though)
Member rs3d Posted October 16, 2009 Author Member Report Share Posted October 16, 2009 I know that the faces are not smooth themselves, but when importing them the Voxel Importer could take Normal Smoothing into account like in the other Import modes (PerPixel, Microvert), where it is called "Auto Smoothing Groups". Sure making multi-million poly meshes helps, but with lots of details its quite impossible. A global Voxel "Smooth All" helps, but fine details are in danger too. Carlosan
Importing to the paint room. 3DCoat by default sets the smoothing groups to your object to 90 degrees when importing objects to the paint room or baking from the retopo room. In the import panel, choose auto-smoothing groups and set it to the degrees so desired. Start at 30 and then change it if necessary. The other is texture filter smoothing. Under the View menu turn off Turn off Linear Texture Filtering. No filtering at all, pixels will clearly be seen. Note: 3DCoat does support smoothing groups from other software with out using the auto-smoothing groups feature. I can import a wings3d exported obj file with smoothing groups into the paint room and 3DC imports it correctly...
Advanced Member blackant Master Posted March 24, 2017 Advanced Member Report Share Posted March 24, 2017 i was not talking about voxel room simply use import to paint on it. this method of recalculating may help but is not perfect because majority of time i do them manually because some faces are angled other not and auto smooth don't know what i'm doing. but well, thanks for your answer, i'll use fbx when the problem is appearing
Featured Comment Carlosan Posted July 20, 2018 Featured Comment Report Share Posted July 20, 2018 On 1/8/2009 at 6:42 AM, Andrew Shpagin said: Smoothing groups are supported via OBJ format. But you need to export normals also from your 3D-model app. 3D-Coat uses normals in OBJ file to recover smoothing groups.
