This week the GIMP project celebrates its 20th anniversary. Back in 1995, University of California students, Peter Mattis and Kimball Spencer, were members of the eXperimental Computing Facility, a Berkeley campus organization of undergraduate students enthusiastic about computers and programming. In June of that year, the two hinted at their intentions to write a free graphical image manipulation program as a means of giving back to the free software community. On November 21st, 20 years ago today, Peter Mattis announced the availability of the “General Image Manipulation Program” on Usenet (later on, the acronym would be redefined to stand for the “GNU Image Manipulation Program”). Since its public release the project has been evolving in many ways as a testbed for new ideas, which was considerably assisted by adding plug-in architecture. Over the years, GIMP amassed a huge amount of new features designed for all kinds of users and practical applications: general image editing, retouching and color grading, digital painting, graphic design, science imaging etc. Between 2006 and 2012, the team collaborated with Peter Sikking of man+machine works to define product vision and improve user experience. Thanks to this collaboration GIMP’s user interface has become more conventional for professional users, and various tools have become more powerful and easy to use. But more importantly, we got a much better idea how to design good interfaces. In the past several years we’ve been working hard on porting GIMP to a newer image processing engine called GEGL. The switch to GEGL made us rewrite or at least tweak pretty much every part of GIMP’s source code. Fortunately, this work is nearing completion, and you’ll soon be able to benefit from all the changes that it’s bringing. New Releases and The Future To celebrate the 20th anniversary, we released an update of the current stable version of GIMP. Newly released GIMP 2.8.16 features support for layer groups in OpenRaster files, fixes for layer groups support in PSD, various user inrterface improvements, OSX build system fixes, translation updates, and more changes. Our immediate future plans are to release first public version in the unstable 2.9.x series that will feature fully functional GEGL port, 16/32bit per channel processing, basic OpenEXR support, vastly improved color management implementation, new tools, on-canvas preview for many filters, and more. This release will encompass over three years of work and become the first milestone towards 2.10. Following v2.10 release, we shall complete the GTK+3 port that is required to bring back state of the art Wacom support for Windows users. When it’s done and GIMP 3.0 is out, we shall finally be able to get started on some very exciting and much anticipated features like non-destructive editing. Please refer to Roadmap for more details.

Anyone ever managed to do tiled sculpting without seams in 3d coat? The second post of THIS thread sows how he does it in zbrush. If you 3d coat experts out there know this isn't possible yet, perhaps you can suggest software (that isn't zbrush) to do this? thanks

I just found out about this free program written by researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. It performs automatic retopology and also guided semi-automatic retopology. It was demonstrated at SIGGRAPH Asia 2015. You can download it from GitHub for free (the actual compiled executable app is there). The license there says that you can use it for any purpose (including commercial purposes), also see the license there for any further questions. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I am interested to see how it compares to 3D-Coat's Autopo or Zbrush's Zremesher. Demo video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6wtw6W4x3I Download from GitHub here: https://github.com/wjakob/instant-meshes I will try to test it sometime this week if/when I get time. If you test it out, please post your results in this thread!

Alright i texture my model at uni and home, both of wich have paid versions of 3d coat, at home i can save normaly but at uni it doesnt let me save because it says its a trial or something. so i usualy just quit the program and then for some reason it askes me 'do you want to save' and i click yes, so thats my workaround for uni, also this means i cannot export textures at uni because of that stupid bug i guess.. But the thing is now im at home on my paid version and it will not let me export my texture. Somehow the version at uni has infected my save and i dont know if ill be able to get my hard work out of 3d coat

Hello everybody, I'm a long time owner of an 3D Coat licence, but not a long time user of this program. I bought it because of it's voxel tool, but after using it for a few days, I wasn't really satisfied with it. I'm a long time ZBrush and Sculptris user too, therefore I was thinking about to sell my 3D Coat licence again since a longer time. But I wasn't here in the forum for an very long time, therefore I didn't know how much 3D Coat has changed since I bought it. I now have downloaded the newest beta version and I have to say, that it has changed tremendously. The brushes seems to be so much smoother and these Liveclay tools are looking great at the first look. And there are so many more tools I didn't know, yet :-) Therefore I have decided, to take another look at 3D Coat. I will challenged myself the next days, to learn all the new functionality. I will post my results here in this thread and if you want, you will be able to download all the models I do during the next days, to take a closer look at them. Sorry for my bad English, but I'm not a native speaker :-( Here is my first test I call her Kim and she is a little cartoon girl. You can download her from here: http://www.sharecg.com/pf/Skias_Onar
