Member IceCaveMan7 Posted December 16, 2015 Member Report Share Posted December 16, 2015 Hello, I am a c4d specialist who is starting a series of "Learning Expeditions" at the two main c4d user forums. I'm also a 3d Coat owner and have been interested in integrating use of 3DCoat with my work in c4d. Your program has gained a notable following in our community, I can assure you! I would like to ask for one or more of you 3dCoat gurus to drop in as valued guests into a a thread/discussion. We would really love for you to briefly chat w/us about using c4d together with Coat...in particular how one uses Coat's UV mapping in a round-trip situation. Again... the context is UV mapping. Answering a few questions there would be of great value and would help spread the word about 3DC: http://www.c4dcafe.com/ipb/forums/topic/90805-c4d-learning-expedition-001-pro-level-uv-mapping/ I ask for the community and for myself. I'm selfish in asking this...because this is a workflow I'd like with my own work.

Member IceCaveMan7 Posted December 17, 2015 Author Member Report Share Posted December 17, 2015 (edited) If creating an account is a fuss I will try to forward some questions. To emphasize again, the focus here is a UV mapping pipeline. Here are a few to start with: 1. Obviously OBJ format is ubiquitous. In moving obj into 3DC and back out... is there any change in the mesh or w/the UV data? 2. Is there a preferred transport format over OBJ? 3. Any limitations or gotchas with round-tripping to be aware of? 4. Are there any tutorials that have been done recently that walk someone through using c4d with 3DC? 5. There are usually a variety of approaches to doing the same thing. Is there a best practice when opening the program and selecting one of the opening options/wizards? 6. What are links to authorized tutorials to walk someone through the latest methods for UV mapping? Reputable Contributor digman Posted December 17, 2015 Reputable Contributor Report Share Posted December 17, 2015 (edited) Official tutorials on the Retopology Toolset at the 3DC YouTube Playlist page. Choose the Retopology Toolset videos. 49 videos in total. I also sent you a pm message... https://www.youtube.com/user/PILGWAY3DCoat/playlists Edited December 17, 2015 by digman
Member IceCaveMan7 Posted December 17, 2015 Author Member Report Share Posted December 17, 2015 (edited) Retop toolset includes procedures for UV mapping? (In most cases there will be no retopo required or involved in the roundtrip workflow.) Edited December 17, 2015 by IceCaveMan7
Reputable Contributor digman Posted December 18, 2015 Reputable Contributor Report Share Posted December 18, 2015 (edited) This tutorial which is part of a series by Christoph Werner explains some of the UV seam creation tools and unwrapping... There many ways to create the uv seams and unwrap in 3DC and is model depended. He uses a method he likes for this model. The UV seam creation and unwrapping tends to be scattered about in the videos... This one is from Retopology Toolsets I gave you. AbnRanger goes briefly go over the regular seam creation tool... Reputable Contributor Solution digman Posted December 18, 2015 Reputable Contributor Solution Report Share Posted December 18, 2015 (edited) One more... It is three years old but shows the basic functions of the edge loop seam creation... The UV path tool has been added since then plus a new default uv unwrapping (Globally Uniform or GU) that Andrew developed and is the default unwrapping in 3DC. The routine reduces stretching when unwrapping. The video is using the UV room instead of the retopo room. His way of importing is not the best way but shows the tool in action. Member IceCaveMan7 Posted December 20, 2015 Author Member Report Share Posted December 20, 2015 (edited) I wanted to forward one very specific question about 3D-Coat UV features. In c4d's BodyPaint you can create and manipulate PSD layers to store your textures. You can also auto-draw the UV mesh onto a PSD layer. Having the boundaries drawn for your UV mesh of course is useful if you want to later hand paint or tweak your material in Photoshop...to see what you are doing. Is there any similar feature in 3D-Coat? Edited December 20, 2015 by IceCaveMan7
