  1. Yep, back and forth works, but there's a lot of extra BS past what I did with the install. It might just be something with my computers permissions (I'm admin, so...) but the way pathtoIO.ini file is handled is seriously busted. As a result, before every max/applink session it needs to be deleted (C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2016\MacroScripts\macro_3DS_AppLink). Unfortunately it gets locked the moment its used once, so if you ever close the applink window you'll need to restart max (and delete the ini) before it'll work properly again. Also due to the ini issues, you will need to re-input the exchange path and output folder at the top of the applik window once for ever session.
  2. This script is weird. I couldn't get it to work until I went into the macro_3DS_AppLink.mcr file and properly tabbed the lines (I find it hard to read scripts without formatting)... Either way, works fine now in both max 2012 and max 2016, using 3DC 4.1 and 4.5
  3. This could actually be quite interesting...assuming, that is, that the feature set for both apps was really pushed.
  4. There have been laptops with desktop cpus dating back at least 10 years. However, everyone I know whos had such laptops have had overheating issues withing 2-3 years of purchase. Short term it may be fine, but I don't trust such things long term.
  5. So it's been two years since I last commented in this topic, and things really haven't changed that much it seems. We got layer groups, but the other two things I mentioned still haven't been addressed I've actually been using ye olde BodyPaint3D again just so get access to PS compatible layer masks (I also like having layer thumbnails and optional true projection painting directly in the viewport). It's fine for hand painted textures, even if it took me several days to get around all the bugs. Layer groups and PBR getting added were cool, but past that I'm feeling rather disappointed in 3DC's development after all this time.
  6. I agree, it's overly complex for what should be a simple task. There are other methods to do this, but they're actually even more complex. Unfortunately the Hide/freeze/select tools haven't been updated in a loooong time. All you can do is bug the devs to do something about it and hope they listen, you're certainly not the first person to mention this issue.
  7. Stencils/stamps are sort of their own thing. This is what I meant: 3D Paint = Cursor follows surface normal and immediately lays paint on to model while its being drawn on screen. Projection Paint = Brush is aligned to screen space, completely ignoring the models normals, and resolution is dependent on screen itself until paint is projected/baked onto the texture.
  8. Wait, are you talking about direct projection paint in the viewport? That has never been possible afaik. Bodypaint and Mari can do that, but 3DC requires you to use projection with an External editor like Photoshop. Amazing concept work btw.
  9. I just tested it and it seems to be a bug. Happens even when the program is running with the Chinese translated UI. Chinese characters also cause some layers to fail to import at all.
  10. 1. View > show 2D grid (with 'snap to 2D grid enabled). Rotate the grid with the menu that pops up to get different angles, or hold shift while rotating to get angles in multiples of 22.5.
  11. Create a UV ID map; make a layer where each UV island is filled with its own random color. Then fill with freeze & paint tolerance the piece you want to work on in the viewport and invert. Clear the freeze to work on the next piece.
  12. This is probably due to the fact that 3DC does not support order independent transparency. Read from "Sorting Problems" on down here if you're not familiar with this type of issue: http://wiki.polycount.com/wiki/Transparency_map
  13. That sounds like something you'd rent time on, not own...
  14. Are you asking how to paint the inside of the barrel? Malo: Projection paint can be much more efficient in certain cases, its one of 3DCoats better features imo. Actually I wish there was an optional way to do it directly in the viewport as well (like in Bodypaint).
  15. Yea I jump between 3DC and PS very regularly, but thought it would be nice to be able to do it in 3DC too.
  16. Is it possible to rotate the view in the texture editor like you can with the canvas in programs like Photoshop? It makes painting things quite a bit easier in some cases.
  17. So, is there any info on the intended extent of what the 'code refactoring', and generally what the team is hoping to achieve with it? Are they rebuilding the entire core application, or just cleaning it up on the surface? Are they going to update some of the more legacy components (CUDA comes to mind)? Will bugs that get fixed stay fixed more often? etc.
  18. On Sep 22 several of the Maxon U.S. Employees took part in a weekly #mochat Twitter event. Several users asked them what was going on with Bodypaint, and well: I thought those around here that have an interest in 3D painting solutions would want to know.
  19. A rather neat font creation app supposedly launching before the end of the month: http://www.prototypo.io/
  20. abnranger: The issue isn't whether the current masking system is "good enough" in 3DC, its a matter of interoperability with other programs. Completely agree.
  21. Whether you personally want it or not, the fact is we were promised a feature that many wanted and a year+ later it still is yet to materialize. If the 3DC staff can't even follow through on features they claim they will give us, what hope is there for features they haven't made a verbal commitment to?
  22. Everyone thats been around here for a while knows that Mantis is where ideas go to die. The only way to have even a shred of hope at getting what you want implemented is to nag about it at every possible opportunity on the forums, and hope that the devs will finally listen. I'm still waiting on layer masks (remember this thread? : http://3d-coat.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=16297 )
  23. It's not a bug, it's just the way 3DC handles textures (masks area outside UVs automatically, and no you can't turn it off sadly). It's the second most requested change for the Paint room on Trello: https://trello.com/c/wQf6AjLY/233-painting-past-uv-shells-bleeding
  24. I've never used Houdini, and know basically nothing about it, but afaik its procedural modeling / simulation are pretty top notch? But at the same time it's not so great for anything else?
