Member Onkelpoe Posted August 17, 2014 Member Report Share Posted August 17, 2014 hi there, I am on a 3DEC trail, to see if it will be a useful piece of software for me or if I had to look for another sculpting tool... My main interest in 3DC is sculpting, re-topo (auto) and UVing. For painting I´ve got other tool, already. Now, I´d like to import an .obj file (a terrain, generated within Word Machinw, about 5Mio polys) - but it seems, like this is just too much for 3DC. I am using the win-7 64bit DX cuda version. A collegue of mine got a similar rig like I own (i5, 8GB, 2GB GTX 770) and he opens the same terrain obj file in Zbrush in under 20 seconds... When try to open it as "surface" - I get "out of memory error" and you can see, one CPU core is at 100% all the time. After that, 3DC crashes...(Bug report sended) I also tried to import the heightmap (16-bit tiff, also from WM) - but I just get a flat surface, no terrain... I already tried to scale up the height, but no matter.. still get a flat box If there is no way to get the terrains working, I will have to buy Zbrush or Modo - which will be priced much higher, but seems like it´s worth the inverstment, unfortunatly a high one for a hobbyist... Carlosan
My test using png output and a 512x512 terrain size Export PNG 16bits import images as mesh Set Autoscale Apply Auto topology remove ngons next steps mark seams - unwarp - bake with PPP - paint
Member Onkelpoe Posted August 17, 2014 Author Member Report Share Posted August 17, 2014 (edited) Hey, thanks for quick reply and testing... Ok, I use 2048x2048 heightmaps (2049x2049 to be correct) - seems, 3DC works only with 512x512 (like in your example) - but this is too low res for my needs. Cheers edit: it works now! maybe using PNG instead of TIFF was the key, here edit 2: ouch.. it´s very "terraced/jaggy".. maybe PNG is just 8bit, instead of 16... edit 3: Hmmm, PS says "16-bits" Edited August 17, 2014 by Onkelpoe
Member Onkelpoe Posted August 17, 2014 Author Member Report Share Posted August 17, 2014 (edited) Meanwhile, I exported another mesh (490MB, 5Mio poly), which also crashes 3DC... tried "quad-export" option in WM an also without (exports tris)... That is a big problem... maybe I should really make a ticket (just write Andrew a mail)? Edited August 17, 2014 by Onkelpoe

Member Onkelpoe Posted August 18, 2014 Author Member Report Share Posted August 18, 2014 (edited) ooookeeyyy... it´s 500MB file, will upload it over night and report the issue tomorrow, when upload is ready (slow internet atm) tested 64bit DX and GL (without CUDA) - same crash and "jaggy" terrain, when import a heightmap (tiff will not work (!), but png) Cheers! Member Onkelpoe Posted August 18, 2014 Author Member Report Share Posted August 18, 2014 Only the GL CUDA Version imports the mesh without crashing... but also "jaggy" terrain from heightmap-import
Member Onkelpoe Posted August 18, 2014 Author Member Report Share Posted August 18, 2014 man... now that keeps crashing, also - I think, I give up on this

Andrew Shpagin
Don't try to import mesh with 5 M for per pixel painting. It is not intended for such purposes. Use File->Import for vertex painting. Then paint, retopo, bake... edit: Seems it crashes in File->Import for vertex painting. I will fix it in nearest beta build (probably tomorrow)
Contributor BeatKitano Posted August 19, 2014 Contributor Report Share Posted August 19, 2014 I'm sometimes a critic of this software, but having the dev fix a flaw when in urgent need, unless you're blur asking autodesk, that doesn't happen much
Member Onkelpoe Posted August 19, 2014 Author Member Report Share Posted August 19, 2014 (edited) Hey, that is good to hear Ok, but I dont want to paint on it - instead, I´d like tune/work on the real mesh - is there really no way? I´ve already managed to load in 5 objects (above 4M tris total) with "repair scan-model in surface mode" and/or "scene in surface mode"), then "voxelized" them and merged them into one singe volume of about 2M tris. 3DC handles this without any problem or stutter... So I thought it would handle 20-30M polys - this is not intended kind of use? Best Regards Edited August 19, 2014 by Onkelpoe
Member Onkelpoe Posted August 19, 2014 Author Member Report Share Posted August 19, 2014 (edited) Back with a new result... I started with File->new "surface-mode scene", choose "empty grid" and then went "File->add model to project", picked the 500MB obj... aaand BOOM -there it is. This way it works 100%, tried 3 times now - no crashing, all good now! So- what did I wrong all the time? Before, I went File->new "surface-mode scene" then clicked on the "Folder" and picked up the obj Why is this result different?! Best regards Edited August 19, 2014 by Onkelpoe

Best regards In the bus model there was unusual normals packing, so coat was crashing. Mountains are probably just deformed patch, so it dows not crash. Follow beta thread - I will post build there relatively soon (I still have several problems on plate before making build). I still recommend File->Import for vertex painting
Member Onkelpoe Posted August 20, 2014 Author Member Report Share Posted August 20, 2014 (edited) Dont know what "bus model" you refer to... For the normal maps: When I open the mesh in the 3DC GL version, normals are ok , when opening in DX version, normals are flipped - so I do not see a problem here. Ok, will have a look at the beta thread. Do not let this distract you, take your time! Andrew Shpagin
In 4.1.13 it will be imported correctly via File->Import for vertex painting

Member Onkelpoe Posted August 24, 2014 Author Member Report Share Posted August 24, 2014 Import of this 8+M poly mesh works in "painting mode" and in "surface mode" 100% now! Uh, forgot: /SOLVED
