Advanced Member Aleksey Posted March 12, 2015 Advanced Member Report Share Posted March 12, 2015 can this be used for gpu rendering? and if it can is it actually $5000 worth of performance?

Advanced Member L'Ancien Regime Posted March 12, 2015 Author Advanced Member Report Share Posted March 12, 2015 (edited) can this be used for gpu rendering? and if it can is it actually $5000 worth of performance? My understanding is that you'd need another gpu (any GTX or pro model would do) for the interface and then have this BEAST plugged in to do your heavy hauling. But as a side note; the Volta is coming soon... Edited March 13, 2015 by L'Ancien Regime
Advanced Member Grimm Posted March 13, 2015 Advanced Member Report Share Posted March 13, 2015 Teslas are primarily used for double precision floating point scientific calculations and don't do very well for single precision. Most GPU renderers use single point precision so in tests I have seen Teslas usually perform slower than the Geforce GPUs for rendering. So unless you desperately need the extra vram, you would be better off buying a couple of Titan Zs or a huge pile of 780s.

Contributor ajz3d Posted March 13, 2015 Contributor Report Share Posted March 13, 2015 $5000! I wonder if rendering in a cloud doesn't come out cheaper than purchasing such a card.
Advanced Member Aleksey Posted March 14, 2015 Advanced Member Report Share Posted March 14, 2015 yeah, defintly cloud rendering for me. I don't render animations locally any more... i just don't have the patience for it..
