More bits (COLOR) per voxel ...

I have not used the DEMO in several week and am not well versed

in what is available in current version. But for me ... If we

can get a few more bits per voxel (what is it now ... 1 bit ??)

we could maybe have a SMALL INDEX integer in say two extra bits ...

you could have up to 4 colors ... but from a pallete. It would give folks

a taste of what sculpting in color would be like.

You know how PLAY-DOH cam in colors ... but kids get 'em mixed up ???

How fun to do in 3D !!!

I know it would cut you voxels by 3 in terms of memory requirement ...

but I think it would be HUGE to sculpt with a few colors.

Andrew ... surely you have some thoughts on this ???? There has got to

be some TRICKY way to do this that would not be horrible on memory.

Maybe you can have TWO kinds of voxels ... color voxels for some objects

and monochrome voxels for others.

I remember this being a discussion when it was still in alpha stage. The consensus at the time was that the workflow should be volumetric sculpt, then retop then paint.

I agree this needs to be reconsidered, here's my suggestion for a fresh approach.

First, rather than every voxel in the entire object having color information, only voxels resulting in a surface have color data assigned.

Second, instead of applying colors, apply shaders with a limit of 8 or so shaders per object thus limiting the amount of memory required.

Third, allow the color. spec and bump/normal map to be baked from voxel model to retop mesh or external mesh(only normal map at the moment).

This would allow for a good base texture to start from. It would also justify the efforts put into the render mode and the shader implementation.

Regards,

Heath
