Advanced Member spacepainter Posted April 27, 2010 Advanced Member Report Share Posted April 27, 2010 Could you please formulate your question more clear? I think it's possible but not sure what you mean.
Advanced Member blackant Master Posted April 27, 2010 Author Advanced Member Report Share Posted April 27, 2010 Could you please formulate your question more clear? I think it's possible but not sure what you mean. i mean like in zbrush you can't paint on sculpture with vertex painting and translate vertex color to texture. here i just want to past a picture on a plane to see reference from what i'm making. an other question what is ptex and where can i fund it ? Member Jean-Luc Posted April 27, 2010 Member Report Share Posted April 27, 2010 I answered your question in the French part of the forum but just in case it could be useful to someone who doesn't already know, here it is in English. You can drag an image from windows explorer into your viewport (either in perspective or in the view where you want the backdrop to appear. A dialogue box appears asking you what you want to do, choose "add reference image" and you will get a lot of nice options to fit the picture to your needs. philnolan3d
an other question what is ptex and where can i fund it ? Ptex is something originally created by Disney and they released it to the public. You can find their official site on it here: http://ptex.us . Basically with Ptex you do not need to create a UV map before you paint, Ptex automatically creates a map for each polygon. In 3DC these small images are laid out on one or more larger images so that you can export them if you like. One of the biggest benefits of Ptex is that you can select polygons and change the texture resolution for each one. Andrew's description of it is pinned at the top of this forum area, here's a link: http://www.3d-coat.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=5073 You can find it under File > Import or in Retopo > Merge For Ptex. you can also see a little video I made if you like showing Ptex when it was first added to 3DC. It has actually been in the current versions of 3DC since early February. The current version is 3.2.11, you can find the latest releases in the 3.2 Updates thread which is pinned at the top of the New Releases & Betas section of the forum. http://www.3d-coat.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=4992

Phil, Do you know whether Lightwave and Modo for the Mac support Ptex? thank you.
philnolan3d
I doubt Modo does but I know LightWave doesn't. As far as i know they only thing that supports it now is 3DC and Renderman. However the way it's implemented in 3DC, you can export it as regular texture images and for many things it will work fine, although it's not ideal. I did have problems doing that in LightWave with Displacement images, everything else worked fine.
Javis
The only app that has support of Ptex ATM, is Renderman.
