  1. Yes! That's perfect! Webmaster please change the forum to look like that. The bright white background is not healthy for the eyes.
  2. You can retopo then use "pick from retopo" command. Also, try smoothing many many times with smooth command (ajz3d made a script for that). Also try downsample to lower res, then upsample again, or switch to surface mode, use clean mesh command or similar, or decimate, then go back to voxel and pick res desired.
  3. Great! I like how it shows the number of points on each edge and that the user can increase or decrease that number as desired.
  4. In the past I have had trouble with redirects from 3DC to other websites, and I reported it. The 3DC webmaster said that he found malicious code and removed it. At that time it was only happening with a certain browser and only when using the forum link from the Google search results. I recommend trying different browsers and linking in from search results or other pages instead of typing the address into the address bar. Sometimes these malicious redirects are hard to reproduce (just like software bugs).
  5. Yeah like Tony said, manual retopo of that model is probably your best bet. It should go pretty easy/fast. When you are doing it, just be sure to put your polygon edges along the places you want to keep sharp. Then bake a normal map to capture the other smaller details. In C4D you could probably get away with just using your new low poly manual retopo model (with the normal map applied) and it will look good enough. If you still think subdivision is necessary, then remember to crease your sharp edges before subdividing.
  6. The Tapatalk 3D-Coat forum app on my iPhone stopped updating. I didn't realize it until just now. I think this new forum design broke the Tapatalk connection somehow. It's funny because the app still worked and acted like everything was normal, but there hadn't been any updates for a day or two. I thought maybe people were starting to lose interest in 3D-Coat. Then I decided to check the desktop version and BOOM! New website! Strange that there were no announcements saying the website design would be changed. Anyways, like everybody else, I don't like the bright white background. I prefer a dark one (better for the eyes). I think the PolyHertz proposed changes (post #18 above) are very good. That way the old color theme is kept, the background is easy for the eyes, and the site will still look new.
  7. 1) there are some Live Clay tools for fixing surfaces, like Clean Clay for example. Also the Geometry Menu has some functions which clean up the mesh (Clean Surface, Close Holes). 2) If you make Autopo run with a big mesh and/or high settings, it can take a long time to complete. 3) Usually Voxel Mode is good for booleans, hard surface modeling, and building base forms. Surface Mode is good for detail work. Also using Voxel or Surface depends on personal preference of artist. Also in Voxel mode you will not experience stretched polygons. In Surface mode you can dynamically subdivide the mesh (some areas of mesh can be high res, while other areas of same mesh low res as desired). Try the Artman Preset brushes in Surface Mode for nice sculpting feel. You can also build your own preset brushes.
  8. Yes this is so true. When I use 3D-Coat I actually feel like I am having fun, it is a very enjoyable experience. When I use any other software it feels more like work.I mean, other software can be exciting and cool to use as well, but there is a certain special feeling about using 3D-Coat that I don't get elsewhere. The UI in 3D-Coat just makes so much sense to me, the tools and controls so intuitive. No it is not perfect, there are bugs and missing features, but I wish I could just do everything in 3D-Coat if that were possible.
  9. Great job! Very cute!
  10. I think they have a Christmas sale every year, most likely this year too. Just be patient.
  11. Yes, this is exactly why Instant Mesh is better than both 3DC and Zbrush auto retopo.Instant Mesh provides good initial results, and then you take a little time to fix up the bad spots by adding some stroke guides (simply brush on the mesh and it updates), and/or move the yellow "singularity" points to get better edgeflow (also with instant feedback). This ability to edit the mesh with instant feedback is the key point that both 3DC and Zbrush lack. It's much better to quickly fix up the mesh after you see the initial results, instead starting all over again, changing settings, then waiting and hoping for better results.
  12. It looks like this new autoretopology program has attracted a lot of attention! There is a thread about it on Blender Artists (including tests and comparisons of it with Zremesher): http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?385344-Instant-field-aligned-meshes And this thread about it on the Modo forum: http://community.thefoundry.co.uk/discussion/topic.aspx?f=4&t=117406 And these articles on CG Channel and CG Press: http://cgpress.org/archives/instant-field-aligned-meshes-paper-and-standalone-tool.html http://www.cgchannel.com/2015/11/download-free-auto-retopology-tool-instant-meshes/ There are also users asking for it to be integrated into 3D-Coat here on this forum: http://3d-coat.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=18580 http://3d-coat.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=7912&p=128916 It seems to me that everybody is interested in Instant Mesh because it allows the user to have more control of how automatic retopology is created. Currently both 3D-Coat and Zbrush force the user to run the automatic algorithm and wait for results, and then if the results aren't satisfactory, the user alters settings and guides, then tries it again, hoping for better results. The difference with Instant Mesh is that the user can tweak the results as they are generated, allowing for more manual control, while still keeping the time-consuming parts of the retopology process automatic. I really hope Andrew and Raul have a look at this, because this is the kind of semi-automatic retopology I have been wanting in 3D-Coat for a long time, and I think this is the future of 3d-modeling! I mean, seriously think about it, a big part of what makes traditional subdivision surface modeling difficult is the manipulation of vertices edges and faces. Just selecting vertices, moving them around, and welding them to other vertices is very tedious and time-consuming. 3D-Coat is great because it allows artists to stop worrying about vertices for most of the creation process, until the very end, when retopology is done. But wouldn't it be nice if we still didn't have to worry about vertices even for retopology? I think this is the missing link. If we could get a semi-automatic retopology feature that was so good that it gave us the exact edge flow we wanted while doing most of the heavy work for us, then maybe we could finally stop pushing and pulling verts altogether! I realize that getting a perfect result from automatic retopology is currently very difficult, but it seems to me that if the user can control it and guide it as it happens, then that would be the fastest and easiest way to get desired results. In any case, I'm glad Instant Mesh was created because it will hopefully inspire the right kind of innovation that we need for the retopology process.
  13. Yes please make auto-retopo more like this in 3D-coat! The source code for the program shown in the video is available on Github. Please have a look at it Farsthary! Maybe it will give you some good ideas for 3D-Coat! The source code is here: https://github.com/wjakob/instant-meshes
  14. Great work! Thanks for sharing!
  15. This is the side of the Blender community that I really like! So many great people there, so willing to share and help out! Thanks so much Jonathan! RetopoFlow in Blender is great, but RetopoFlow in 3D-Coat would be a dream come true! (for me at least)
  16. I just found out about this free program written by researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. It performs automatic retopology and also guided semi-automatic retopology. It was demonstrated at SIGGRAPH Asia 2015. You can download it from GitHub for free (the actual compiled executable app is there). The license there says that you can use it for any purpose (including commercial purposes), also see the license there for any further questions. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I am interested to see how it compares to 3D-Coat's Autopo or Zbrush's Zremesher. Demo video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6wtw6W4x3I Download from GitHub here: https://github.com/wjakob/instant-meshes I will try to test it sometime this week if/when I get time. If you test it out, please post your results in this thread!
  17. Yes, the more I look into it, I think this might really be true. There was a time when 3d software and hardware costs made it impossible for hobbyists to make digital art or animation, but that time is gone. Prices have dropped tremendously. Anybody who takes their digital art hobby seriously will be willing to spend several thousands of dollars buying a nice computer and some decent software. This indie market is quite similar to the serious gamer market. They invest quite a bit of money buying nice gaming pcs and video games. I think the 3d software companies have realized that their market has shifted and they are starting to target the hardcore digital art hobbyist and indie market. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if most of the people buying 3d-Coat are not studios but hobbyists. I mean 3D-Coat's price (even the "pro" license) is pretty perfect for the hobbyist and indie budget. Does that mean that 3D software companies don't need to innovate since their customers are hobbyists? Not at all. If anything I think it makes the competition even more fierce than it ever was.
  18. Yeah that seems about right I think. Octane alphas and betas first came out in 2010 I think, so it makes sense that there is a big spike there.
  19. I also did this one for digital sculpting: It seems pretty accurate. Zbrush of course the industry standard, second place for Mudbox, and 3d-Coat relatively small but slowly getting more popular over time. These results match the results of a survey I saw on CG Talk a while back: There is also this poll on CG Talk which seems to support the results I got in my first post:
  20. Ha ha! Yes, it is pretty entertaining! Ok, so I did this one: Wow, I didn't know Sketchup was that popular! But you are right, maybe the architects are rendering visualizations in Sketchup instead of Max these days. I think there are some pretty good rendering plug-ins for Sketchup. Modo seems to still be a small part of the market but solid with its fans.
