Looking for Advice on the best method to Detail Models
stusutcliffe replied to pgson's topic in Finished Projects
Nicely done! I certainly admire your patience on this one! If I start to go beyond a week on a project I start giving it second thoughts.... I spent about 6 weeks once, and vowed never again! Now you have it "done" It would be nice to see an action pose! -

I get those occasionally ! But not quite as badly as that! But it has never really bothered me too much. Have you tried the GL version. Maybe its a display thing....But I dont really know much about the technicalities . I am sure Andrew will have an idea what it is.

I use it ....occasionally . It works brilliantly! But i only really use it for painting and painting bumps, ( If I try and sculpt with it it kinda make me travel sick!!!) I only really bought it on a whim, I think if someone took it away from me I would not be too bothered . Abnranger ( I think swears by his!) ( for folks who are new to this device, when I say I paint with it I mean you use it to rotate the model whilst you paint with your pen/mouse.So you can continuously paint all around your model without stopping)

You could just export that as it is as an OBJ. Then I think you could just re import it if you want to paint it.

Fuzzzz, I have had loads of probs with my Wacom Bamboo! Not sure if it is 3dcoats fault though. After doing loads of google searches the best solution I found was this.( Cannot guarantee this is a fix ,but worth a try!) Go to the windows start button. ( if you are Mac, I guess this will be irrelevant...I imagine!) type services in the search box the top result should open up the bit in Windows you need. ( You can of course use the control panel to find this.) Go down the big list and find "Tablet PC input service" and disable it. I think this stops some sought of conflict between wacom and windows. ( I have a feeling it sometimes switches itself back on again!!) Disclaimer:- I have no real idea what I am saying when it comes to computer internals!

Take a look at the top row of menu, about halfway along...uncheck "autopick" I am guessing that is your problem! ( Though I also find this turns itself on by itself occasionally !) edit. Not sure if this was available pre vers 4?

Yeah, if its a tight fitting shirt or jacket its good to sculpt ( with a bit of google reference) But its good to do a dynamic if you have a flimsy fly away bit! ( or a poncho.......strange thing is , I have never needed to make a poncho...) I usually have a cool down period when I do Autopo....not quite figured that one out yet. The latest incarnation does seem to work better for me but it just takes flippin' ages to calculate! Unfortunately my 5+ year old computer is going to have to be a 6+ year old computer.

I cant really offer a solution to this because it all too clever for me! But having done a few experiments with this I know where you are coming from. I usually use a combination of Carrara and 3dcoat for my limited attempts at cloth sims. I have never tried to "snap" back a retopo to the simulation, But I am aware of 3dcoat getting confused by thin sections. Perhaps some lateral thinking? Maybe make the cloth really thick by increasing the inset depth, thus giving the snapping back something easier to go at ? When I need my finished cloth to have a thickness, it is usually at the sleeve, I extrude it in Carrara later. ( I dont think the freeze tool works on Voxels anyway, because it a solid lump of "stuff" so it would not know what to freeze. You could change to surface to freeze, but like you say I dont think there is a way of using this to not retopo an area.) For what its worth my current workflow is something like this, https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7219382/drape.pdf It a really quick thing I did to show someone on the Carrara forum. But obviously not much use to you if you do not use Carrara, but I suppose any 3d software will be capable. If you find any sneaky workarounds let the forum know.

I've just been chatting about 3dCoat on the Carrara forum, and one person is quite interested but he could not find a price. I checked, thinking to myself ,surely I usually see it on the front page , and I could not see any price either, only an upgrade page. Are we both missing something here ? Where should someone go to buy?

My bewtocks go numb when I retopo, and my mouth goes dry? I need a new chair and more fluids.....

Thanks for that! That will do it , though I reckon for my current purposes , I can do it in carrara . Funny, I remember looking at this vid ages ago! Just forgot. I will watch it all the way thru when my aches and pains have subsided ,cant concentrate at the moment., rotten old back.....

What I am making is a bathtub, with four traditional "claw" feet. So I can sculpt a foot and duplicate it three times...done. Now I could retopo each one in turn, which should be easy enough as they will be quite simple. But the question is can I retopo just one of them and duplicate this retopo to save time.Or better still duplicate a finished retopoed and painted foot in the paint room. I think the way I will be doing this at the moment is to just retopo and paint one ,and then duplicate it later in Carrara. Basically the question I am asking is ,how can I duplicate finished painted objects in the paint room?

From Brush to Color Picker and back to Brush

You can pick a colour off the model you are painting by pressing "V". -
After I accidentally won the last Carrara Challenge ,I got lumbered with ,er... asked to host the next one! So if you render in Carrara and want to make a movie poster go here and take a look! ( you can use 3dCoat for your modeling!) http://www.daz3d.com/forums/viewthread/33911/ stu
