Advanced Member geo_n Posted December 13, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 13, 2013 I was going to buy it but after thorough research I'm not going to. Its a paid PLE the way I see it. Its not really a stand alone modeller for 149usd. Models can be exported to fbx and are limited to 7000polys BUT non-commercial use. Its too bad I was really looking forward to owning a personal copy of modo modelling module to use outside the office. http://steamcommunity.com/app/244290/discussions/0/630799808377375564/ http://steamcommunity.com/app/244290/discussions/0/630799905217253085/
Carlosan
is for DOTA 2 enthusiasts, the only export option mentioned is to FBX, with a 7k poly limit. This tool is currently limited to Source Engine games big warning here for any potential buyer
Reputable Contributor AbnRanger Posted December 13, 2013 Reputable Contributor Report Share Posted December 13, 2013 Yeah, it's really limited like Maya LT, but for what Steam customers would be using it for, I guess it fits.
Advanced Member Nossgrr Posted December 13, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 13, 2013 Man... I have to say I'm on the fence on this one, remove the 7k export limit and leave the rest 'as is' and I'm in.. Reason for removing the limit is, I would probably retopo in 3d-coat instead of Modo. But other than that, it's a killer deal.

This tool is currently limited to Source Engine games big warning here for any potential buyer What is the warning for? It's clearly stated on the product sheet in Steam. I already own Modo, so I don't need it. But I think if all you're doing is creating content for said products (DOTA2, etc.) then it's awesome. You can make money off your items in game anyway and have it pay for itself. IMHO, it's a nice start, but it would be much more useful if it didn't have the limit of 7k polys and was a pure modeling module. I suspect it would cost much more than $150 though. It's clearly stated on the product sheet in Steam, sure. Some user will misunderstood that MODO Steam Edition delivers a complete content creation solution for Source engine games, nothing more. note I forgot to mention that cant export .obj
Advanced Member geo_n Posted December 15, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 15, 2013 (edited) Btw the 7k poly limit is for tris not quad. So its even more limiting. Still non-commercial use btw even a single tri of this can't be used for profit. Since there's 3dcoat there why hasn't Andrew made an upload to steam engine function in 3dcoat? I think its a good idea since 3dcoat has no limitation afaik. Edited December 15, 2013 by geo_n
Advanced Member chingchong Posted December 27, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 27, 2013 (edited) some of you probably know, but maybe some didnt get the info Modo 701 (the fulkl package ) is now 40% off, extended till new years day .. http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/about-us/news-awards/festive-savings/ im lurking around on the site for days now, to buy or not to buy, because thats now a reasonable price for that package , at least in my eyes Edited December 27, 2013 by chingchong
Javis
Yeah that's a good deal. My buy in was $695, back in the day. Heh. At least the deal is on for a little while longer, so you can take a little more time to decide.
Advanced Member chingchong Posted December 28, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 28, 2013 Im probably will join in the next days, Javis i sneaked into the trial and some tutorials. and it was the first package which let me render a image intuitively, was surprised how easy the UI is. What i most like is that PS-like layer organization and blending modes.
Contributor ajz3d Posted December 28, 2013 Contributor Report Share Posted December 28, 2013 I wish they offered Modo's modelling module as a separate program at a lower price.
Advanced Member geo_n Posted December 29, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 29, 2013 (edited) I wish they offered Modo's modelling module as a separate program at a lower price. Yeah me, too. Don't really need the animation, rendering and shadertree. I was going to buy modo steam thinking it was a lower priced modo modeller but its non-commercial and 7000 triangle export limit so will wait when they do bring the other versions mentioned because the Foundry seems to be planning to do what Maxon is doing. When Modo standard is around 4000usd they probably will offer version that strip out features like cinema 4d. Advanced Member chingchong Posted December 29, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 29, 2013 (edited) i need the full package , dont own a package yet. tried to learn blender.... but after ours and ours of tutorials im sick of it.(maybe i'm to dumb for that software) I'll spent my time now better on doing things with a decent and intuitive package, than a free but time consuming (for me) software. I want things to get done within days and not within months^^ Edited December 29, 2013 by chingchong
Member fuzzzzzz Posted January 3, 2014 Member Report Share Posted January 3, 2014 i am a source engine developer since 2004, and if you think you could use modo SE for a project of mod under the source engine you should regret you purchase. For information ; FBX importer are available only with Sourcefilmmaker, dota 2 and team fortress 2 throught the publishing tools. The problem with MODO SE is that the description of the product is entirely wrong no full dota2 support. because no animation support no full source engine support, cause other engine branche of the Source engine don' t have the FBX import tool. for sure modo is a great 3d package, but how many people will create dota 2 items that will never being integrated into the final game ? probably few items on the market. http://steamcommunity.com//profiles/76561197993105545/recommended/244290/
