3D-Coat 3.5 updates thread

does anyone else have huge performancfe issues with the recent builds? An empty voxel scene comes at 6 fps when I change camera view or even only slide over the menus with the mouse. The CPU performance goes to over 50 % on a quad core by only navigating an empty scene. Weird thing is that when i select "curves" i can navigate much faster again, as i used to. In fact only a selected "Voxel brush" makes this happen, if i select other tools it works again.

Is that just my PC?

EDIT: I found that it happens when i use the combination:

* large alpha 16 bit on a voxel brush

* this makes GUI very very slow

No - not just your PC. Are you running open GL version by chance? - See if the same with DX version...

I always use the DX version as i have a retail gamer card and no quadro

Mmm, I'm running a quadro card and for me, openGL used to be fastest. With this latest build however, its very sluggish and grinds to a halt after a short while (5 to 10 mins). Switching over to DX version sees a major improvement, although I still get delays switching between tools, when I have a large alpha bush library loaded in.

i have that problem, too. it started with v3.5.18 when the mip-mapping thing was introduced. on my side it's not the brush size, but the alpha size. if i use an alpha bigger than 1000x1000 it starts to get really laggy, 5-6 fps. the bigger the alpha, the larger the lag and low fps. it happens on both versions, gl & dx.

i'm on w7 64bit, i950, gtx 460. the problem is easy to repoduce cause it happens all the time.

sorry, of course youre right, i meant the alpha size. I mostly use 2048*2048

Amazing news!! If a highlighted voxel mass on a tip of a cylinder or any selected mesh part can be rotated to face entirely the rotational direction this will be revolutionary.

Also if the new pose tool can highlight a whole separate volume in cube2x2 mode and that separate volume - multiple merged meshes merged into one complex separate volume - can be posed like the primitive Freeblob, then there is a revolutionary new tool in 3D-Coat!!!

The strength of the new pose feature in 3D-Coat can be compared to introduction of mechanical modeling in Zbrush, where there were only organic modeling tools in the past. Big jump in development!

Hi Phil,

I believe that in general there are some issues regarding the cooperation between 3D Coat and Wacom.

Ever since I installed 3D Coat a little more than a year ago, I have had this strange problem where certain pen actions stop working after using 3D Coat for a while. In particular the pan function is having a really hard time staying alive. When I start up 3D-Coat I can put down the tip of my pen anywhere outside of my model, click the button on my pen assigned to "right click" and then drag across my tablet in order to pan the view-port. After a couple of minutes, sometimes only seconds this is no longer possible. I can fix it however, by jumping to any other application running on my system and then jump back to 3D-Coat, bringing it into focus again. Now things are working again for a couple of minutes. This problem has been there with every version of 3D-Coat I have worked with and with Wacom Intuos3, Intuos4 and Cintiq21. I have also tried a number of different Wacom drivers without any positive change.

The reason I have not been mentioning anything in this forum until now, is that I suspect part of the problem is in Wacoms drivers ;) . Anyways now that I am at it I might as well file a bug in Mantis.

I have the same issue with my wacom cintiq. I can get it to happen every time if I run the atuopo command. After I go through all the steps and the mesh is generated the cintiq pen does not work properly. As soon as I go over and click on my second monitor with my mouse 3d coat works properly again. Its a very annoying bug.

All wacoms, at least under OSX, have this problem when in retopo room. Confirmed and reported to mantis many times. Please use mouse only when in retopo. Simple as this. Especially when editing UV stretched islands.

I just tested this pretty thoroughly and can't find any problem. It must be a mac thing.

I've had problems with this before...even today I had it with version 18a.

I'm not sure if it's a 3d Coat, Wacom or Windows 7 thing though...sometimes it behaves strangely in other programs such as Photoshop. Like not recognizing my pressure sensitivity.

Overall, I've been so happy with the most recent build. There's not much I can really think of that I would change. That being said, I'm looking forward to the additions to pose mode that Andrew has been working on. Also, more speed is always good.

Could you generally imagine to hook up "Through all Volumes"-Toggle in more Voxel-Tools too?

I believe it was also very useful e.g. or cutting perfectly aligned holes through several Objects at once.

Wow! "through all volumes" using Move brush works really well.

It is a very powerful addition.

Ok here is some Pose Tool Feedback :brush:(DX Cuda 64,GTX 280) :

-Through all volume does not work in symmetry mode on my side.

-Only line,sphere and ring mode selection works through all volumes,pen mode does not work (with brush ,or E-panel).

-Invert selection does not work correctly when selection include other volumes.

-Freeform lattice works on multiple volumes but the cube lattice does not fit the selection.

+ a little bug (It only happens using "through all volumes" and if not all volumes are in same mode vox/surf)

1)Make a selection using line mode from top to bottom.

2)Make a new selection using line mode bottom to top.

3)Pose tool menu becomes empty.

-Pose load/save works great...even with multi-volume selections! :)

Could selections be added as a panel in Ui like Retopo Groups?

It would be much faster for users to change selections when posing.

Andrew,also one last thing users need I forgot (I knew I forgot something important :blush: ..)

..a "smooth selection" button. (like "smooth all" but for pose selections)

Line,ring,sphere selections are naturally smoothed but e-panel selections come unsmoothed.

It is very long and sometimes difficult to smooth all parts manually with brush especially small parts like fingers.

Anyway,gigantic improvements and additions lattely!

Awesome update! First thing I noticed... The new Moveable Stamp mode doesn't undo properly with voxels. See my video below, I stamped on a bunch of star shapes, then when I undo there are voxel pieces left behind that I cannot undo. If I try to brush on them with any other tool they disappear.

Some tools don't seem to work at all with Moveable Stamp. In this video it shows the Airbrush and Extrude tools only flash the sculpting effect on and off.

Edit: A few more little things- With Through All Volumes only Line, Sphere, and Object modes select through all. Clear Selection doesn't work "through all" with any of them.

I am SO happy to have Pose working correctly with symmetry, that will make life a lot easier.

I'm confused about Save / Load in Pose. Every time I try to load it tells me the geometry has changed and it can't be loaded. This is what I did: make a selection and some sort of change, then save the pose. Clear the selection, try to load the saved file. Then I get the error. Can you only save a selection that has never been used? -- Yes I tested this and it works fine. But what's the point in that case?

Hi guys,

I've been away from 3D Coat for a while... but I've just downloaded the latest version and I am blown away with the changes. Especially speed. It is so damn fast now. Smoothing is excellent and I'm in the process of trying out the stamp tool.
