NGMasks: Procedural Masks (Preset Window)
What is NGMasks?
NGMasks (Node Graph Masks) is a preset window that stores procedural masks created using the Node Editor. Unlike standard raster masks (textures), these masks are generated mathematically, are resolution-independent, and can adapt to the model’s geometry (using parameters like curvature, AO, etc.).
How it works
The NGMasks window contains a library of ready-made masks. When you select a mask, 3DCoat automatically loads its node graph, which is connected to the Mask channel of the current layer or Smart Material.
- Application: Drag and drop a mask from the preset window onto a layer in the Layers panel, or click on it while editing a Smart Material.
- Editing: After applying a mask, you can open the Node Editor window to adjust the graph parameters directly for your current task.
Categories and Examples
In the standard library, masks are usually divided into logical categories (as seen in the UserPrefs\NodeGraphs\NGMasks folder):
- Dirt: Masks that accumulate in crevices or shaded areas (using AO and Cavity).
- Rust: Patterns that simulate the spread of rust.
- Scratches: Masks with thin lines, often tied to geometric protrusions.
- Fabric / Wood / Leather: Procedural textures for limiting the material fill to specific surfaces.
- Patterns: Geometric masks.
Creating your own mask preset
If you have created an interesting graph for mask generation in the Node Editor:
- Ensure your graph is connected to the appropriate output node (e.g.,
outMask). - Click the save button in the Node Editor window and choose the option to save as a preset (Mask).
- Your mask will appear in the
NGMaskswindow, and under the hood, 3DCoat will save the.ngfile along with preview images (_64.tga,_256.tga) into theUserPrefs\NodeGraphs\NGMasksfolder.
